Advocates of gay rights stage protest
But a hoped-for meeting with Rep. Sally Kern about her recent anti-gay remarks is not to be.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Advocates of gay and lesbian rights came to the Capitol in force Tuesday in hopes of meeting with Rep. Sally Kern, but they were told that
the lawmaker who called homosexuality worse than "terrorists and Islam" was nowhere to be found.
About 300 people gathered to protest Kern's recent comments, which ended up on YouTube and drew national attention.
Robin Meyers, senior minister at Mayflower Congregational Church in Oklahoma City, said Kern's homophobic comments are a "national embarrassment for Oklahoma."
"It is frightening to me that Sally Kern is an elected official doing the people's business," he said.
James C. Shields, who said he lives in Kern's northwest Oklahoma City legislative district, said he went by her office to invite the lawmaker to the rally.
An assistant told him that Kern had "left for the day because she did not have any committee meetings."
Kern said later that she would be willing to meet next week with two or three people representing the gay and lesbian community.
"I'd have no problem meeting with them next week when I have my lawyer," she said.
Kern said she is working with a lawyer from the Thomas More Law Center based in Ann Arbor, Mich. The center, described as a conservative Christian center, has offices throughout the country.
Tuesday's rally was planned by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, as well as Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders.
Conna Wilkinson said she attended as a mother who discovered that her daughter was a lesbian, emphasizing that sexual orientation is not a choice someone makes.
"In sixth grade, she cried herself to sleep," Wilkinson said of her daughter.
Luckily, she said, her daughter did not commit suicide or run away.
"Do you think people choose to be gay? Why would you?" she asked.
Meyers called on House Speaker Chris Benge and Gov. Brad Henry to condemn Kern.
"I call upon Kern to apologize to all of us," he said.
Meyers asserted that Kern's words were hate speech. He noted that she had compared homosexuality to "cancer of the toe," saying that it had to be eradicated.
Henry has said he doesn't think Kern's remarks represent Oklahoma, adding, "I would just urge all public officials in Oklahoma to cool the rhetoric. Think before you speak and be respectful of all people."
Benge has said that Kern has a right to voice her opinions.

Did Kern skip the part of the Bible that says women should not cut their hair or wear make-up? How about women should be at home obeying their husbands. Why isn't she talking about divorce and sex outside of marriage?
No. I do not agree with what I just wrote, but it is in the Bible. Why do people just pick and choose what they believe? That is, what is convenient for them.
A lot of these responses do not show that the person believes that homosexuality is a sin. They show bigotry and hatred, which I believe that Jesus does not condone.

Liberal morons:
Her comments were about homosexual BEHAVIOR and the advocacy of such BEHAVIOR. Homosexuality is not an ethnicity, race, religion, culture, or any other defining characteristic, it is a single, deviant BEHAVIOR. Your liberal speech condemning Kern and her right to speak against bad BEHAVIOR is the only hate speech going on here.

I guess I missed the part where I condemned Kern and her right to speak.
I was just expressing my frustation with people using the Bible to support their idea of sins, but ignoring many "sins" that Christians apparently no longer consider "sins".
Many conservative Christians say and do a lot of things that hurt the way true Christians are seen.
I may be liberal, but I am not a moron. I am a Christian, but I hesitate to condemn actions of others until I become perfect.

2. 3/19/2008 2:16:27 AM, Justin, Tulsa... Very Good response to these obvious ignorant people. I believe in the bible! I dont cut my hair!!!!!! I dont wear makeup. And dont quote obey they husband! That is not exactly what that means. All of us have sin. But sin is part of our makeup. The problem here is going against nature. Its not being a sinner. It is human nature for men and women to be attracted to one another. Can these queers help it. Probably not because of how they were brought up by their parents. It isnt just natural behavior, these people have an illness. As far as I am concerned they are just as bad as or worse than terrorists. Terrorists are not trying to end mankind. If men and women do not mate and reproduce, the human race will become extinct. Terrorists only try to destroy a certain group of people who dont agree with their ways or ones they dont like or choose to destroy. They are not trying to kill the human race. I liked Kerns homofobic comments. I believe she should have left the Islams out of it. That wasnt necessary. But think about it a minute. What would happen to mankind if no one reproduced you idiots!!!!

You are mistaken, Dover.
Gays are using artificial insemination to make babies. And many more gays are adopting.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, 34 percent of lesbian couples and 22 percent of gay male couples are raising at least one child under 18 in their home.

For a country that was founded by those escaping religious persecution and firmly believed in separation of church and state - we are still falling WAY short when it comes to freedom and liberty for all.
But one thing is clear.
Those religions that preach hatred and discrimination against some Americans are now showing STEEP DECLINES in membership, here in the United States:
Catholic (7.5% members lost)
Baptist (3.7% members lost)
Methodist (2.1% members lost)

In the course of my life I have had several friends and couple of family members who are gay. How anyone can say that this is a choice they have is beyond me. I didn't choose being hetereosexual, it's just who I am, and the same goes for them.
Their BEHAVIOR is often being in committed relationships, for which they want only the same rights I have, being homeowners and taxpayers and parents.
I feel so sorry for those of you who carry so much hate around. Wouldn't this be a better world if you could just drop all of it?

Sally Kerns commits are under free speach as a priviate citizen. However as a Elected offical of the state she has a responsibility to contol her priviate emotions and thoughts for the rights of all oklahomans.
She is promoting gay bashing.
I dont think because gays are asking for egual rights that makes them special. Just egual.
I am so glad to belong to a different church. I am so proud not to be a southern baptist. And my wife and I are so proud of our gay friends.

NO ONE is disputing Sally Kern's right to have and express an opinion.
NO ONE.
What has enraged people around the world is that she used her platform as an elected official to express her personal and religious beliefs (separation of church and state, remember?) in her hateful attacks against a particular group of people.
She said hateful and false things. (So did Hitler.)
In my own experience, I have found that the ones with an agenda to push are the right-wing Christian fundamentalists. They seem to forget (or ignore) the fact that not everyone in America is a Christian who believes that the bible is the word of God. If one doesn't believe as they do, they are the first to condemn and villify.
Sally Kern did not only offend gays and lesbians, she offended the followers of Islam. The Islamic religion is NOT a threat to this nation. And neither are gays and lesbians.
She also clearly stated that not all religions are equal. I would like her to explain which ones are superior and why.
If her comments were taken out of context, as she claims, let her produce them in their entirety. She claims that she has publicly expressed the same opinions several times in the past. Let her produce her notes.
She can believe whatever she wants to believe. But as an elected official representing a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse constituency, she has NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to say the ignorant things that she did in a public forum. Doing so was an abuse of her platform.
I hope the good people of Oklahoma will see this twisted and stupid woman for what she is and vote her out of office.
If she were truly Christian, she would beg the gays and lesbians and their loved ones to forgive her for the hurt, pain, anger, and confusion she has caused with her hate-filled spew.
Internet sites and blogs are buzzing with comments from straight and gay people all over the world who find Kern's actions repugnant.
While she claims that she will not apologize to the millions of gay and lesbian people she has insulted, she certainly owes the people of Oklahoma an apology for casting your state in such a negative light internationally. She has not served you well.
She will forever be remembered as the woman from Oklahoma who expressed hatred and falsehoods about some of her constituents. Such a sad but well-deserved legacy.
She is a disgrace to Oklahoma and to this nation.
Shame on her!
The whole world is watching.

Dear Sally Kern:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your speech, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that the bible clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your adoring fan

Kerns was referring to the "gay agenda" not individuals.. and it was to a private group of republicans, not a public speech..
Those not familiar with the gay agenda, it's the process in which gay sex is being made mainstream in american culture..
examples are orgagizing gay groups in our childrens schools (over 3500 schools nationwide) and putting gay books in the school libraries..
Ms. Kerns was referring to this as cancer and dangerous, but has been taken out of context by gays.
I personnally agree with her and stand shoulder to shoulder with her.
This is the heartland, not NYC, Boston or San Fran which are cesspools that are already lost.

Your Adoring Fan.. Great letter. I just wish the other bigots in this message board would read and answer. We all bring our personal belifts to the table.. We all read the bible and gather what we need to guide our life (if you believe). That is why we call it a personal relationship with Christ. I do not need anyone else to define my relationship with Christ… I can find the way by myself.
Since when do I need someone such as Sally Kern or her Baptist Minster Husband to help me understand the word of God. Can't I do that for myself.. and do I not have my own personal relationship with God.. or can only Sally tell me when I can talk with God?
The bottom line.. she has the right to her personal opinion.. but.. as a public official she has social responsibly of her tongue. As far as special rights.. what special rights have gay people asked for? Just equal rights as far as I can see.

Sexual orientation is a choice?
Actually, sexual orientation is determined at birth: it's genetic and involves what happens in the womb. As reported in the New York Times, "Human sexual behavior is not a free-form performance, biologists are finding, but is guided at every turn by genetic programs."
