The Tulsa Police Academy graduated 14 cadets on Friday, putting a fresh crop of officers on the city streets.

"This is another chapter of TPD history being made," Police Chief Ron Palmer told about 350 law enforcement officers, family members and friends of the recruits.

Calling the Tulsa Police Department one of the finest in the nation, Palmer said the new officers will go to work fighting crime and protecting people.

Officer Donnie R. Johnson, a former University of Tulsa wide receiver, and Officer Jackie L. Keeler, who spent five years as a Hillcrest Medical Center volunteer assisting with child-abuse prevention, sat beside each other during the graduation ceremony.

Both said they waited a long time to become Tulsa police officers.

"I have a videotape from a high school homecoming where I said I wanted to become a police officer," Johnson said after the graduation.

"Back then I wanted to be an officer because I liked danger," he said. "Now I want to help prevent gang violence, and I think safety first."

Keeler said defending people comes naturally. "I've always had to protect my family and others," she said.

The recruits started the 25-week academy in July. They completed more than 957 hours of instruction, which included training in the law, firearms, defensive tactics, driver training, report writing and officer survival, as well as psychological evaluations.

The new officers will start their law enforcement careers with a 16-week
field-training program at each of the department's three patrol divisions.

Cpl. B.K. Smith warned the graduates about what they will soon face.

"You're going to see things that make you mad, cry and scared," said Smith, during the ceremony. "You may even have to lay down your life."

The Tulsa Police Department has more than 800 officers.

14? That's it? I bet you if Tulsa paid UAW scale wages, for what is clearly a more challenging job, there would be thousands upon thousands of applicants, maybe more.

TPD lost at least three officers to retirement just in December.

My, my. We've got a bunch of brainwashed soles. I hate to rain on all your parades but these guys won't be chasing criminals. They won't be patrolling your neighborhoods. They won't be helping to reduce accidents. The next time you see'em they'll be holding a radar gun out on our streets generating revenue for the city coffers. Sad but true.

Here we go again. Ol' Joe5 from Bixby. Always badmouthing the police. Probably got a ticket or was put in lockup. If ol' Joe had his way, we could drive a hundred miles per hour thru school zones and residential areas. Highway 169 would be the Daytona 500. So what, he thinks, if 45,000 men, women and children are killed on our streets and highways each year. That's no problem. Saving innocent motorist and pedestrian lives are low priority for ol' Joe, I guess.

I agree with 4 Years From Now. I would expect at least 30 or more. Hopefully more will join the force in 2009. Police, fire and EMSA workers are underpaid to protect us and keep us safe. There is no way I could do the work they do. Congrats to the new grads and God keep you safe.

As for Joe5, God must love idiots as he had made so many of them now days. lol

Everyone ignore Missy...M, I think she is probably a 12 or 13 year old adolescent.

To the folks that have said "only 14". The police academy usually starts with around 30 recruits. Some quit others get washed out due to the high stress of the occupation. These recruits should be commended for having endured the academy but it is not over yet. They still have to do 16 weeks in the field with three different field training officers. During this time period usually two or three will quit because street training is much more demanding than classroom training. And for some of the recruits this is there first "real" job after college and they just are not mature enough with life experiences to handle what police have to see and do on the job...

Yes, 14 is all that Queen Taylor let us have. Remember that next year is election year so she will have two bigger classes. We have suffered theough her term this long and now that is is election year she is going to try to persuade you to vote for her and show you that she cares about crime.."One Term Taylor"

we dont need 14 more officers. we need citizens that stand up and stop our children from doing stupid stuff. instead the parents allow the kids to run wild with no discipline. we do not take accountability for our own actions any more. and missy you go girl. go get some blue flu.
Ydog. id use that 4 year degree and go federal. make some cash.

IMHO a 4 year degree to become a cop is ludicrous. most states require 2 year and 4 year for detective. here we require a 4 year degree. some states dont even require a degree at all. so maybe we need to address this requirement?

Wow B52, I must have been pretty much on target otherwise there's no sense in becoming so defensive. I don't know where you get that I was knocking the police, they don't set their priority, the TPD management and the city does. I didn't mention anything about speed, that's your assumption. Ever been in a B52? Oh by the way, what did you say your badge number was?
