A Tulsa homeowner shot and killed a teenager who was breaking into his house early Tuesday, police said.
Shortly before 3 a.m., three people broke into a home in the 1300 block of North Irvington Avenue, Tulsa Police Cpl. Mark Shelton said.
Many of the 15 to 20 occupants were awake, including the home- owner, who heard the break-in and got his gun.
Two of the suspected burglars, including one who was armed, were moving through the house when they encountered the homeowner, Shelton said.
Gunfire was exchanged. The homeowner shot one of the intruders twice in the chest, and the homeowner's wife was shot in the abdomen.
The wounded intruder, Cody Ray Payne, 15, left the house but died in the front yard, police said.
The homeowner's wife was hospitalized but is expected to recover.
The other two suspected burglars ran from the house and were not found, Shelton said. They were described as black, in their late teens and wearing hooded sweatshirts and dark baggy pants.
The victims, a Hispanic family, did not want their names released, said Capt. Ryan Perkins.
Hispanic families throughout the city have been a "target of robberies and burglaries" because of a perception among criminals that Hispanics keep large amounts of
cash on them or inside their home, Perkins said.
Hispanics also may have been targeted recently because of the perception that they are reluctant to report a crime to police because of state immigration laws, he said.
About a month ago, multiple home invasions involving Hispanic victims occurred in north Tulsa, but a group of individuals were recently taken into custody in connection to those crimes. Since then, police have noticed that robberies and burglaries involving Hispanics in north Tulsa have dropped, Perkins said.
Anyone with information about the two intruderes who fled on Tuesday can call Crime Stoppers at 596-COPS or can text or e-mail police at

. The Crime Commission offers rewards for information leading to arrests, and those reporting information can remain anonymous.

Ahh that makes sense. Perhaps the robbers were trying to rob the whole group. This was a very traumatizing experience for the Hispanic family. They are afraid to go back to their home according to the newscast. I hope their nerves settle in time for Xmas and that they count their blessings, especially since it looks like the wife will pull through. Hang in there folks!

Crooks like soft targets, this family was anything but. An innocent person was hurt, but it could have been worse. It seems the proper action was taken to repell this home invasion.

Being armed may have saved these 10 people from lot of suffering. Another news item I read claimed the woman only had been grazed. One less person in the armed robbery business and two more people have been given good reason to reconsider their career choice.

The hoodlums better think twice about targeting hispanic families. A Mexican family lives down the street from us. They can be very kind, gentle, helpful, and friendly, but if you mess with or offend one of them, you have offended all of them.

You were so wrong scumbags, Next time you are going to break into an Hispanic family house, think twice, they have guns too! I hope the woman who was shot recover fast, so they can move out of that neighborhood infested with armed robbers.

Phil, It's Christmas time. Maybe they were relatives visiting or something. I usually have up to 20 people in my home this time of year, too, and I am not Hispanic.

Phil, I was with a hispanic man for many years. When we went to KS to visit his familia there might be 50 of us in a house at the same time. Everyone from the elders to the infants would be there. We didn't dump our children at babysitters. Just family!
People like you Phil are why the rest of us stay concerned about profiling. It's called Ignorance.

Phil, "I should have said there not they."
No, you should have said nothing at all. Work on that hate, man. Merry Christmas anyway.

Many of our upstanding white christian landlords rent houses to low income hispanic people rent calculated by the head or number of people. However I am glad this group had its own protection.
