The candidate for president of Oral Roberts University is meeting this week with the school's namesake.

Mark Rutland is in at Roberts' California home with ORU board chairman Mart Green. He will be on campus next week, leading up to a Jan. 28 board meeting to confirm him as university president.

Rutland is a dynamic speaker and great fundraiser, said Jim Buskirk, founding dean of the ORU seminary and a friend of Rutland’s for 40 years.

“He’s the most capable person that I can think of to come and be the president of such a unique place as Oral Roberts University,” Buskirk said. “I think he’ll call forth the best for ORU, and he will help anoint and enable the best in ORU.”

ORU's presidential selection committee announced Rutland as its choice last week. He is president of Southeastern University, a Christian liberal arts college in Lakeland, Fla.

Hope that the Roberts family doesn't have a vote in this decision.

I would assume that the decision was already made. It wouldn't have been presented to the public if they weren't almost certain he was going to be the next president.

The entire Roberts family is gone from the University, except for Oral, who is the chancellor. He also is a lifetime member of the Board of Trustees, but does not have a vote.

I think this is one of those...."Don't need your permission, but would love your blessing"

Since the university has already committed to retain the name "Oral Roberts University," it is clear that the new Trustees are equally as committed to its original vision, and want to move forward with Oral Robert's approval.
Perhaps only the alumni, or other Christians, can appreciate how visionary Oral Roberts was to have conceived of this unique university. To continue with its name, and seek the continued endorsement of its founder, is both a complement to OR, and a statement that this university's purpose is still progressive and relevant to today's students.
My hope is that Dr. Rutland will be wildly successful in moving ORU and its legacy of students forward.
