Tulsa World, Oklahoman to share content

By Staff Reports

Last Modified: 1/23/2009  2:31 AM

Oklahoma's two largest news organizations, the Tulsa World and The Oklahoman, announced Thursday they will share selected stories, photos and other news content to better serve their audiences throughout the state.

The agreement means some content produced by the Tulsa World staff will appear in The Oklahoman and on NewsOK.com, and content produced by The Oklahoman staff will appear in the Tulsa World and on tulsaworld.com.

Stories and photos produced by one organization and published by the other will carry attribution to the contributing newspaper or Web site.

"We are excited at the quality and breadth of journalism that can be done by combining the two largest news-gathering operations in the state," said Joe Worley, executive editor of the Tulsa World.

Ed Kelley, The Oklahoman's editor, said the collaboration provides more coverage of news in Oklahoma for the organizations' audiences at an uncertain time for the news industry.

Both The Oklahoman and the World have terminated newsroom positions in the past four months as part of cost-cutting measures.

Over time the two organizations will focus on reducing some areas of duplication, such as sending reporters from both The Oklahoman and the World to cover routine news events.

"We want to try to make sure the level of coverage doesn't drop even as our staffs are smaller," Kelley said. "Partnering with the World and their professionals makes
a lot of sense for both of us."

Both Kelley and Worley said the two organizations will maintain their separate voices on their editorial and opinion pages, as well as their individual approaches to gathering news.

The agreement between the papers is historic in that each paper is independently owned, and together they represent more than 200 years of reporting in the state of Oklahoma. The Tulsa World and The Oklahoman are each family owned, representing two of the largest such newspapers in the country.

"We each have independent spirits going back to our beginnings," said Worley. "And while we plan to share some of our talent, I think readers will see that we will also maintain our independence from each other."

The agreement in Oklahoma follows a number of news-sharing agreements that have been announced by newspapers in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas and the Washington, D.C., area.

Our beloved Will Rogers always made his remarks with a smile on his face. Does "Will Rodgers" sound like he's smiling this morning?

The Oklahoman will probably get the better of this deal. Its content has always been very thin soup, and it has been called (rightly) the worst daily newspaper in America. Its "news" stories are sometimes ethically challenged, promoting its owners' financial agendas. Its editorial policy and op-ed columns are somewhere to the right of... anyone I can imagine.

But times are tough in the newspaper business. This is probably a necessary step, and could theoretically benefit both papers.

Good luck to both Oklahoma dailies. We need you.

Ah, the real reason.

"why would the oklahoman lower their standards to that of the TW"

With all due respect righton, your comment is back-@sswards.

The Oklahoman is not (IMHO) a newspaper but rather an editorial rag without principals.
Heck - we even used it in my journalism class as an example of what NOT to do, like, run editorials on the front page.

On the other hand, this joint venture is a necessary evil.
The demise of old media requires new partnerships.

And let's look on the bright side, shall we?
As some of you are fond of saying, the Tulsa World leans to the left and certainly, The Oklahoman is unabashingly far-right.

Fari and balanced!

Maybe times are tough. But, why would a reasonably good newspaper enter into a sharing agreement with the "Daily Dissapointment," which has been called by the Columbia University School of Journalism, "The worse newspaper in America?" This move seriously diminishes the immage of the TW.

Cowboy,

What's wrong with bringing Ahmadinejad to the US and listening to what he has to say?

That doesn't mean we have to agree with his opinion or outlook on the Middle East. Maybe he'll learn something about us and us from him during his visit and both sides can benefit.

Ahmadinejad is not even the top dog in Iran and makes very few of the important decisions there.

Yes, maybe he'll realize that publically announcing his desire to destroy Israel
wasn't very nice, resign his post, and move to America to convert to Christianity with the fear of death. My sentiments, exactly!

The Tulsa World PLUS(+) the Daily Oklahoman still equals(=) ZERO(0) metro newspapers in Southeastern Oklahoma....

Some of you may call this a blessing, others may not, but at least you all have a choice to buy or not to buy....

I wonder what todays Hog Show updates are in the Hugo whatever-it's-called....

Now they can layoff even more people because they can. The only good thing about this is that we might get a little bit of news about Western Oklahoma. The World and all three TV stations seem to stop all reporting of anything that happens west of Stroud.

No,Cowboy....I believe the conservatives already beat us to it with their trickle down economics theories and deregulation.

As for Iran....we have done much more damage to their country in the last 50 years than they will probably ever do to the US. Our support of Saddam Hussein in the 80's during the Iran-Iraq war killed a half a million Iranians.Isolating Iran is not going to change anything.

About Israel....we should build our foreign policy according to what benefits the US,not Israel.

I will be looking for the skull and cross-bones tag to be prominently displayed on the Daily Disappointment's articles. I'm not sure either newspaper should survive if the TW is going to allow itself to be polluted in such a way. I agree with Ignatz . . . God help us.

Sure the TW could come up with a better plan than to include crap from the DO?

Maybe the Oklahoman will teach the TW how to print a paper without half pages in the classified section and how to do away with all the color in the classified section. I read stories online here that are never printed but the movie selections are printed twice. TW has no leadership. At least I got the web site for the oklahoman out of this article.

So if a World reporter goes to Oklahoma City to cover something and writes a story and it shows up in the Oklahoman, even though it's by a Tulsa reporter -- does that violate the time-space continuum, somehow? I'm so confused...

great, left OKC, came to Tulsa, enjoying a little better newspaper...
The Daily Disappointment is a joke, its only a sounding board for the Gaylord family--soon we will have only one state newspaper with a red enforced one sided view...instead of reading the Oklahoma Observer at the Library I'm dropping this subscription and supporting them, a truly bipartisan paper demonstrating far better journalism. Am waiting to see where DelCour and Pearson wind up, they are far too good for this rag.

The TW has no left wing commentaries...want left wing visit a local store and check out'Z' 'ISR' and other political magazines--well maybe not you'd be calling for a magazine and book ban to restrict freedom of the press

Both Oklahoma newspapers are right-wing, the Oklahoman more so than the World.

I stopped trusting the Oklahoman decades ago, its editorials random silliness or the too often recurring rape of truth and reality and its letters-to-the-editor a sidesplitting albeit sometimes scary trip into fantasyland (often more comical than the comics page). Now the World is climbing into bed with it. I’m in a dither.

For the World readers, however, there is an upside. They can now toss their sleeping pills into the trashcan. For those sleepless nights, the answer is an Ed Kelley (editor) video. Trust me, you’ll be awake at the end of it.

The Tulsa World and the Daily Disappointment from OK City.

That should really be a source of some unbiased news - NOT!
