Passenger dies in accident near BA Expressway
By ALTHEA PETERSON World Staff Writer

Last Modified: 1/23/2009 11:28 AM
A 20-year-old man died in a late Thursday night one-car collision near the Broken Arrow Expressway, said Tulsa Police Cpl. T.J. Campbell.
According to police, 18-year-old Joel Jaimes was driving westbound at about 10 p.m. Thursday near 5000 E. 31st. St. with two passengers when he lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle rolled several times before hitting a light pole and coming to a stop upside down, Campbell said.
One passenger riding in the front seat, a 20-year-old man, died at the scene, Campbell said. The victim was still wearing his seatbelt in the vehicle when police arrived.
However, Jaimes and the other passenger ran from the scene, according to police.
Jaimes was later stopped by security at Cloud 9 Bar near 31st Street and Yale Avenue.
According to jail records, Jaimes was booked in Tulsa County at 2:15 a.m. Friday and is being held on charges of second degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an injury or death, driving without a license and insurance and also driving under the influence of alcohol.
Jaimes also is being held for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to jail records.
The second passenger has still not been found, Campbell said.
Police said they are still trying to find the victim's family.

why don't the police set up road blocks to check drivers for insurance and license?they use to do this.

What underlying costs of this accident are being paid by the US taxpayer? Police response? Highway cleanup? Medical response teams? Coroners?
Have any of you ever considered how much it costs society every time there is an accident like this, or a drive-by shooting, resulting in lengthy hospital stays? We complain about the outrageous prices hospitals charge, but we fail to recognize these expenses have to be passed on to people with money and/or insurance. Does anyone believe the majority of these victims have either? That's why a penny Tylenol becomes $5 at the hospital.

Chase: "why don't the police set up road blocks to check drivers for insurance and license?they use to do this."
Because the rest of us that don't drink and drive, and do pay our auto insurance and taxes DON'T DESERVE TO BE STOPPED AND HASSLED BY THE COPS OUR TAXES PAY FOR.
lucky girl: "this is why i hate drinking"
Yeah, alcohol is solely responsible for this. It couldn't possibly have been Jaimes' lack of personal responsibility.

We need solutions, people! How did this illegal kid get a driver's license? We do have law's covering the drunk driving & illegal status, they need to be inforced. NOW!

This accident would be less inflamatory if we didn't have to associate 'illegal' with 'I get to pay for these expenses'. Including the expenses to house and transport this 18 year old idiot back to his home country.
One doesn't have to be racist to speak out against what this behavior costs them as well as the costs to our society simply to be prepared for handling illegal perpetrators.
And if believing that your are impervious to the driver's license and insurance laws because you aren't a citizen isn't bad enough, now it has grown into the fact that the dui laws don't apply either. What other laws have they decided not to worry about.
It is true that there are many that comment here are simply trying to make their points and sometimes they have to find an unrelated article when their topic doesn't come up on a particular day. As in, I am shocked that nobody has blamed the mayor yet.

If this guy never got a valid driver's license, which is required by law to drive a car, that means he never passed the written, driving, or vision tests required to get a license.
That means he may not know our driving laws, be able to operate a car, be able to read, or be able to see.

Righton, we can't "send all illegals back to mexico." Not all undocumented migrants came from Mexico and the story doesn't say whether Jaimes did either.
HurricaneHarry and Mr Purdy are absolutely correct. The problem was driving drunk, not failing to fill out immigration documents.

How does this alien have a license but no insurance. I thought you had to have insurance to have a valid drivers license.

QLC- you bring up a really good point. What happens to an alien (illegal or not) when they are charged with a misdemeanor in the U.S.? Do they stand trial here, get convicted, then get deported and sentenced in their own countries? Or do we sentence them here? Or are they just sent back for due process in their home country?

Do away with the IRS and go to a consumption tax and then he would be paying for his government sponsored health care, imprisonment, and the funeral for his buddy.

righton "2/3 of all jailed inmates in California are illeagals"
Wake up we are not in California; this is Oklahoma. How does the inmate population of California have anything to do with this story, beside try and inflame a hatred for illeagal immigrants?
This was caused by drinking and drving period..
Dr. I think with felonys they serve their terms and then are deported, I am not sure about misdomeanors. I would hope they would just be deported and hopfully get a fine paid by them. We don't need the system cluttered up and pay for illeagal prisoners to be kept at $54 plus a day.

A group of illegals was moving dirt on a lot next to our business so I walked over and asked them what was going to be built there. Of the six not one could speak a word of English! How lazy do you have to be to live in a forign country and not learn the language?

I feel like if Mayor Taylor had better control over the Fire Department, and the bidding process and Transportation and and, and, and, and (endless isn't it?) we would not have the problem of an 18 yr. old unlicensed, undocumented, drinking and driving. Maybe, in her spare time, she could man a roadblock and stop this type of behavior. If not her then Gov. Henry since he has done nothing during his entire term in office.

How exactly did you know the workers were undocumented? Did you ask for their green cards? Maybe they just pretended like they couldn't speak English so you would go away.

Dr. S
I have worked in the system for 17 yrs. and this is how it works. When a person is in custody he must appear before a judge within 48hrs. Usually the illegal will plead guilty. The judge will fine or sentence him and then suspend the sentence so he can be deported. If he sneaks back and is caught he is now a illeagal alien with conviction which is a federal felony nad does some jail time.

Hurried headline writers, talking TV heads, and others will label this an "accident". I don't buy that. Puppies and babies have accidents. People are killed in traffic collisons, wreck, crahses, etc.
