BARTLESVILLE — Bartlesville has been named one of the top 20 places to live in the West by a national magazine.
American Cowboy magazine cited the city's history as a frontier town transformed by the discovery of oil that maintains its blend of fine arts and wildlife preservation.
The April/May 2009 issue of the magazine makes special note of oilman Frank Phillips, who founded Phillips Petroleum Co. and had a fondness for the West.
That carried over into the creation of his country home, now the Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve, where buffalo roam and Colt firearms have their place next to Frederic Remington paintings.
"It's a wonderful honor for Bartlesville, and we do agree with them that this is a great place to live," Mayor Tom Gorman said Thursday.
"We are right in the midst of several working ranches in this area, and we have plenty of examples of real cowboys around here."
The magazine notes the elusive quality in defining the West today, but that "you know it when you see it."
In searching for today's best Western locales, the publication looked for places that are "experiencing life — simplified."
Other regional cities named to the list are Gunnison- Crested Butte, Colo.; Ruidoso, N.M.; Stephenville, Texas; Dodge City, Kan.; Fort Robinson, Neb.; and St. Joseph, Mo.— LAURA SUMMERS,
