Liberals told to leave
An instructor for a hunter safety course orders Obama voters to get out of his class.

Thirteen-year-old Lane Dunkley just wanted to go hunting with his grandfather.

What he got was a lecture on politics.

Dunkley and his father, Daniel Reddy, who live in Tulsa, went to Broken Arrow on Tuesday night for a hunter safety course normally required to get an Oklahoma hunting license.

The class was a reward of sorts. Dunkley, who wants to go hunting with his grandfather, was told he could take the class only if he brought up his grades.

So he did — to a B-plus average.

But when father and son arrived at the lesson, the volunteer instructor, Kell Wolf, asked if any of the students voted for President Barack Obama.

Reddy, a transplanted Californian — and former Marine — raised his hand.

According to Reddy and others in the room, Wolf called Obama "the next thing to the Antichrist" and ordered Reddy and Dunkley from the room. When Reddy refused, Wolf said he would not teach "liberals" and would cancel the course if Reddy didn't leave.

So Reddy and Dunkley left, as did a few others.

Lance Meek, hunter education coordinator for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, said Wolf had been a volunteer instructor for "a long time, probably 15 years or more" and "from what we've heard and observed, had always done a great job. He worked with the kids really well."

But when Meek received a call Wednesday morning — from someone other than the Reddys — he said he had no choice.

"I got the call at 8:30, and by 9 o'clock (Wolf) was no longer a volunteer for us."

Contacted on Friday, Wolf had no comment on the matter. Meek said he talked briefly to Wolf on Wednesday, and that Wolf did not deny ordering Reddy from the class or offer an explanation.

Lane Dunkley said the situation made him angry.

"This was a big deal for me because my grandpa doesn't have a lot of time to hunt anymore," he said. "I rarely get to hang out with my grandfather.

"I thought I would never be able to get my license."

Stacy Reddy, Daniel Reddy's wife and Lane Dunkley's mother, said the family was surprised by how quickly the wildlife department acted.

"Lance Meek called and apologized up and down and wanted to know what they could do to make it right," she said.

"The only thing we really wanted was for my son to be able to take the hunter safety course, and there wasn't another one in the Tulsa area with an opening for the rest of 2009."

So Meek arranged for a private class

"They called and said they'd meet us any time, anywhere," said Daniel Reddy. "Their response has been exemplary. It has really restored my faith in government."

Meek and Stacy Reddy said it illustrates how difficult the ongoing changes in the federal government are for some Oklahomans.

"I realize a lot of people are unhappy right now," said Stacy Reddy, "but this was something my son worked his tail off to do."

Meek sounded grieved that a long-time volunteer with a spotless record seemed to have veered so suddenly off the tracks.

"It's a shame. What he did is definitely not all right with us," Meek said, "but his heart has been in the right place for a long, long time."

Wow I'm disgusted - you can't do that stuff! Thanks for acting quickly, ODWC. Hope and pray this doesn't make the national news. Its unfortunately this kind of story that puts us on the map.

"And the problem with this is?"

What's sad is that someone posted this. Remember, the job of Mr. Wolf, volunteer or not, was to teach a gun safety class, nothing else.

Many assume (and you know what happens when we assume things) that because we're a state overrun with conservatives, that everybody is 'like minded'. Believe it or not, 'liberal' is not a bad word and there are many Democrats that hunt, not that their aim is a good as Dick Cheney's.

This kind of intolerance is the true terrorism this country should be focused on obliterating. Not the man, but the philosophy that he or his party or his race holds all the knowledge and power because he disagrees with another's philosophy or politics or race. Mr. Wolf is misguided, misinformed, and worst of all, he owns a gun.
Thank you, Mr. Meek for doing the right thing. You may only be one person, but your actions were correct. 2009 should be the year we decide to turn our backs once and for all on prejudice of any kind. One can only hope and pray for such a miracle.

He was so against that criminal Obama, but probably voted for the other criminal Bush who while campaigning SUPPORTED the assault weapons ban.

I thinkit was appropriate to remove him from teaching, volunteer or not. We should also remove the Neo-Socialist Indoctrinators from our public schools.

I suspect that the true Obama haters are the very people who were aghast that liberals had disdain for Bush. "Why do they demonize Bush?" "What about respecting the office of the Presidency?"

Now that the shoe is on the other political foot, it's open season on Obama. While I do think this instructor went too far, it our constitutional right to criticize the president or anyone else. However, I'm just always amazed at how incredulous each party gets at the other for doing so.

From 1980 to 2000 I taught just about everything from hunter safety to lifeguarding, water safety, beginner swimming, first aid, CPR, Disaster Relief, and Ham Radio. One thing they drilled into my head in the instructor certifications is to have a politically and sociologically transparent program as is possible. That means if a warm body shows up for class then they are admitted. I can guarantee you the OK DOW, Red Cross, YMCA, and FEMA do not allow this to happen at their classes. These people need to retire and find a hobby.

ShawnS, I'm appalled you were asked to leave a class because of your views on abortion. When did this happen? What was the class, what institution and who was the instructor?

Having something like this happen is unbelievable. Having posts on here that defend this type of discrimination is even worse.

Wait until this hits the national news. People like this Wolf guy are dangerous. People who defend him are dangerous.

This is absolutely crazy!

I'm impressed the parents of this boy were taking time to teach him gun safety. This will probably save someones life down the road. I commend the parents for their efforts! Sometimes everybody ought to check their political views at the door, especially if children are involved.

If you're going to kick a liberal out of a gun training class because his party supports gun control, Republican's should be kicked out of college because their party supports anti-intellectualism (because as we found out during the election, it is "elitist" in their eyes to educate yourself at at the liberal bastion of the Ivy League)

Nobody, never before in any place of teaching ask a student who they voted for or to get out of the classroom if they voted for Bush or whoever the president was. This can't be tolerated.

""What about respecting the office of the Presidency?""

That's the problem with people, they expect respect without earning it. Obama has no practicle experience in business, politics, or leadership yet we are expected to respect and trust him blindly?

PS.. wasn't the right up in arms when a liberal professor kicked a right-winger out of their class for arguing with her about the war? I don't recall many liberals defending her actions. It's amazing that the right is all for freedom of thought, as long as you think the way they do.

Why should anyone be surprised by this?
Oklahoma is, by-and-large, swings so far to the right, it almost falls off the edge of sanity.
...
Kell Wolf - I'll have to remember that name.
While I would normally argue for his right to free speech, the arena of where he spoke and what he asked of those who voted for our president was way out of order.
...
Who you or I vote for is OUR own business and should have no bearing on anything or anybody.
...
I'd be MORE concerned of those who did NOT vote.
...
As for Kell Wolf, I hope he engages brain before activiating mouth next time.
A GOOD hunter knows when to keep the safety on...and in this case, Wolf shot off his mouth without checking his weapon first.
...
What a dupe!

Went too far? That's it?

People, you reichwingers are always wearing your flags draped around your big mouths, screaming about patrionism, and God and then you're not not infuriated by this outright discrimination?

That's the problem with this country, and it always has been the problem. DISCRIMINATORY.

You'll fall on your bloody knees praying to God, and scream 'you're either with us or your aren't, "I ain't no hyphanated-American", but you'll stand up for discrimination, or turn your head away.

Ken Tul's comments are an example of one of the major problems in this country; people of opposite political affiliations view each other as enemies. We are all Americans. The differences between democrats and republicans come down to a few specifics (abortion, gun control, welfare), not ideology (capitalism vs. communism). We've got to start treating people with differing political views with respect.

How sad Mr. Wolf cared more about the views of those in his class than he did of what he was really there for.... To teach. Sad Mr. Reddy's son had to experience this. True, He just wanted to go hunting with his Grandpa and had worked hard getting his grades up. I almost have concerns for the quality of gun safety instructions this Mr. Wolf provided.

That's awesome.
Somebody needs to hire this guy full time and give him a bonus.

This illustrates the difference between conservatives and liberals.
If you're a jack@$$, we're gonna tell you about it.
A liberal would just tell you that you need "help" and recommend counseling, maybe offer a hug.

Mr. Wolf and his supporters here seem to be stuck in the 60's. He refused service to someone with different beliefs, much like some once refused service to people with a darker skin color. We sure have come a long way, haven't we? What makes anyone so puffed up with pride to think that he or she has the right to take away someone else's rights?
