Sales of guns, ammo still high
One shop says the "hoarding" of ammunition since Obama's election has created a shortage.
A Ruger .380, a popular concealed-carry weapon, is seen Thursday with .380 (left), 9 mm, .45 and .40 caliber cartridges. The gun sells for $329. SHERRY BROWN/Tulsa World

Correction:
This story originally reported the wrong years when comparing the number of permit applications. The cutline incorrectly identified the .40 and .45 caliber bullets. The story and cutline have been corrected.

Four months after the election of President Barack Obama, firearms and ammunition sales in Tulsa remain at a fever pitch.
Popular self-protection ammunition is often sold out at local stores, weapons are flying off shelves and the state reports an 87 percent increase in concealed carry permit applications for February 2009 over February 2008.
"People are hoarding. They're creating a shortage," Jim Prall at Sports World on 41st Street said of ammunition sales. "We've sold more ammunition in the last three months than we sold last year."
Gun sales spiked in November with the election of Barack Obama and Democrats adding to their majority in Congress. But local gun dealers say the spike is turning into a steady climb with political worries about gun rights as well as worries about the economy and potential for increased crime.
Prall said his store planned ahead for the increase, having seen a similar spike
after Bill Clinton was elected, but the previous jump in sales pales in comparison to what's happening now.
"Most we're selling now we got back in September, but we bought pallets then where normally we wouldn't have ordered that much."
The surprise sales come with .380 caliber semi- automatic pistols. A relatively small self-protection weapon, it's not one that people typically fire in great quantity at the firing range, Prall said. Yet, the ammunition is now hard to find. "Nobody would have predicted that," he said.
"What's happened is everybody is afraid because the Democrats are anti-gun," said David Stone, president of Dong's Guns and Ammo on East Admiral Place.
Internet chatter about bills in Congress that would create additional taxes on firearms and ammunition components, require strict licensing and ban more types of so-called "assault weapons" add to the concern, Stone said. "That's just driving everyone into panic mode," he said. "We're selling 10 times the ammo we used to."
Similar bills have come up in Congress before, but few have advanced.
"We ran completely out here of 9 mm and .380," said Johny Mathews, product and service manager at the U.S. Shooting Sports Academy on East 66th Street North. "We were begging, borrowing and stealing from wherever."
Concealed-carry classes at the academy are booked through April. "We used to do 15-person classes, and now we do 24 because of the demand," he said.
Mathews believes that politics are partly to blame, but the economy also has people worried.
"It's 50/50, I think" he said. "When people lose jobs and get desperate, good people can sometimes do bad things. People hear more about home invasions, robberies, and they think it will only get worse. Then they're afraid they might lose their guns or ammo, so they stock up."
Sales are so intense that Stone has limited sales of .380 ammo to one box per customer at Dong's. He has .380-caliber handguns for sale, and likes to be able to sell ammunition to whoever buys a gun, he said.
A shipment of 10 Ruger .380 LCP handguns was sold in 24 hours this week — seven the first day, three the next. "Last week I had 28 boxes of .380, rationed to one per person, and it was gone in three days," Stone said.
Academy Sporting Goods stores also are low on .380 ammo. "The other day we got 16 boxes of .380 and a guy came in first thing and bought all 16," said Jon Ide, hunting and fishing sales associate at the 41st Street store. "A few people are doing all the buying, and it's the people who are trying to just get a box or two that can't find any."
The increased sales comes with an increase in Oklahomans seeking concealed-carry permits.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation pulled in additional help last month so it could process concealed-carry permit applications within the required 90 days, according to the supervisor of the self-defense licensing unit. Unit workers do not release their names.
The 87.2 percent increase for February 2009 over the same month last year was partially due to renewal applications for permits issued three and five years ago. But new applications have steadily risen in the past three years, and increased markedly since November, she said.
She couldn't share the monthly breakdown on numbers, but as an indication of the volume said the state issued a total of 18,510 permits in 2008. The bureau's annual reports show the state issued 16,426 permits in 2007 and 9,529 in 2006. There are 75,525 valid active concealed-carry permits in Oklahoma, she said.

Who says President Hussein hasn't been good for the economy. We should have bought stock in the gun and ammo makers. If I didn't already have several guns, I, too, would have been in the frenzy. Prez is famous for his anti-gun stance, he is also from the gun-control city of Chicago...you know, where cops and gangs are the only ones with guns. Where off-duty cops beat up female bartenders who refuse to serve them more drinks. I am glad there are more people getting concealed carry permits --bad news for the criminals, good news for the rest of us.

Republican FEAR.
I can't believe all the nonsense I hear from the right. I've listened to Obama's speeches on gun control, they aren't the hogwash the RNC and Rush L. tell them they are.
Also--they need to learn--they lost more freedom from Bush, then they will ever lose with Obama.

Tony, when listing those who are telling lies about Barack Obama's anti-gun voting record you neglected to mention the NRA. You should go to their web site and read the case they have made against the President. Problem is that when the NRA makes their case they include a link that gives proof of every vote he has cast against your rights to own a gun. Those links take you to the Illinois and United States websites where the votes of Illinois State Senators and U.S. Senators are kept. It is impossible for the NRA to falsify that voting record and it is impossible for the President to hide from it. If his voting record is not enough to cause fear, then his choice of Chief of Staff and Cabinet Members should convince you that he is not a gun friendly politician.
The people you are reading about today who are in a panic to buy guns and ammunition have already examined the record and they have learned that their panic is justified.

My local gun store has a picture of the "Employee of the Month" posted prominently on the wall above the gun display case. You guessed it. For the past five months running, that picture has been Barack Hussein Obama, responsible for more sales of guns and ammo than anyone else.
Why? Because for months his campaign website statement on fighting "urban crime" promised he would support "common sense" gun laws, the one gun per month limitation on gun purchases by an individual, and more extensive identification checks on individuals buying guns. These restrictions apply, you understand, only to law abiding citizens. The criminals will continue to be coddled by the law enforcement officials appointed by 0bama.
Prime example is his pick for Atty. General. Eric Holder is a long-time foe of 2nd Amendment rights, and as soon as he was approved to that post issued statements indicating his interest to reinstate the Clinton "assault weapons" ban, and to work toward strengthening gun laws. This is the same Eric Holder who influenced Bill Clinton to issue pardons to domestic and foreign terrorists and to an international money launderer.

The caption is incorrect. Those aren't bullets; they are cartridges. Also, it is redundant to use "." and "caliber", since "." means caliber. Wonderful journalism.

BTW, the caption under the Ruger .380 is incorrect. The order of the rounds pictured is, from left to right, .380 caliber, 9 mm, .45 and .40 caliber. And it's getting harder to find ANY ammo on the shelves of the stores up here in Pennsylvania.
Luckily, it hasn't affected availability of ammunition components as yet, for the reloaders among us.

If we had a police chief that was as interested in proactive crime detection as he is in the public image of the department, we might not be forced to do their job for them by arming our households. Those who say get rid of the weapons obviously never faced a threat to the lives and security of their families.

I am happy to see the populace arm itself and make the news doing so, it will make criminals and politicians think twice about thier future. Now you left loonies read that right I made no direct threat to anyone, but the perception that more people are armed and ready to defend themselves will make a difference.

Tony G, and Axel.
Both of you, wake up and sniff, it ain't coffee you smell! I have more friends and aquaintences in many states than I can count. What I'm hearing from most of them concerns me. The purchase of firearms and ammunition is the tip of the iceburg. In a nutshell, many people don't trust this administration and their hard core followers, (guess that would include you two) and most are concerned what will happen when those followers realize that OB can't make good on his campaign promises. I've never seen or heard this much concern in my life. Name calling, ignoring the problem or attacking the messenger won't make it go away. I wish an answer to this but, I don't.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away! Think I will go out and buy a few more guns. Don't understand why people are so afraid of law abiding citizens owning guns. Hope the liberals and their family never need self protection.

Hey Tony, tell us exactly which freedoms you lost under President Bush? I hear that all the time from libs, but they can never tell me what that means. Also, it cracks me up when libs think all gun owners are rednecks. Have you ever been to a gun show? You see everyone from back woods survivalists to doctors, lawyers, blue collar workers, women, kids, and every ethnicity. All who appreciate their inalienable right to self-defense and who understand that an unarmed society is a society in slavery. About the only thing you don't see is gays parading around in thongs and body paint. I would say that is true diversity, not the forced diversity you see at your local university.

Ever tried to use a civilian gun against the military or even SWAT team? Try it out sometime and see how far your pea shooters get. Republicans maintain they want guns to stop the government, while they insist on having a military capable of destroying us with a missile from thousands of miles away. Get real people and see that you over armed our government and that all the small arms in the world wouldn't beat the military. If you want true freedom from government intimidation, try scaling this military machine down first.

I love the liberals posts. It just reiterates to me how wrong their side is and how they probably wouldn't have such views if they weren't so intellectually lazy. Hey dipsticks, check out H.B 45 that's in committee right now. Check out Attorney Generals Eric Holders comments in February about the Nobama admin. wanting to reinstate the assault weapons ban and make it permanent. Still think this is all just unfounded panic? Do some research and stop voting for clowns like Nobama and his empty suited ilk just because it 'feels' like the correct thing to do. Gawd morons like 'Tony' on this site disgust me. Thanks for ruining the country dolts.

Gun enthusiast mentality is entertaining. And a little sad.
"Have you ever been to a gun show? You see everyone from back woods survivalists to doctors, lawyers, blue collar workers, women, kids, and every ethnicity. One could easily establish that Shazamm has issues about the closet he's in with all of his guns.

Kerugma, thankfully the NRA has as much right to operate as your precious little Moveon, or People for the American Way
The NRA stands up for the Second Amendment rights of all Americans, even the ones who are too short-sighted to make the appropriate comparisons between BarryWorld and the Third Reich.
You sound as though you might be much happier in a country which heavily restricts guns and does not give the right to keep and bear arms Constitutional protection. Might I suggest Britain or Germany?
Enjoy installing multiple deadbolts on your doors to keep out the armed home-invasion robbers!
