Record food-stamp use seen
More Oklahomans are receiving the assistance than ever before.

More Oklahomans are receiving food stamps than at any point in state history, state Department of Human Services officials say.
More people have been added to the assistance program each month for about a year because of the economy.
"It's something we believed was going to come sooner or later because we were within 746 of that record in January," DHS spokesman George Johnson said.
"We could possibly see where that might have a steady increase. We believe March could be in concert with what we've been seeing."
In February, 444,184 Oklahomans received food stamps, which is 2,000 more than in the previous month.
The previous high was set in December 2005, when 443,045 people received aid.
The increase is a 6.4 percent jump compared with February 2008, when 417,624 Oklahomans received food stamps.
Food stamps are provided in a federal program meant as a supplement to a family's budget.
The average benefit is $3 per person per day.
The federal stimulus package is expected to boost that to about $3.40 a day, DHS officials say.
The stimulus package will add a total of 13.6 percent to the food stamp program and will go into effect April 1.
"If that 13.6 percent is applied to the (current numbers), that would mean there will be $6.5 million coming into the economy of Oklahoma," Johnson said.
"That goes straight through to the thousands of retail grocery outlets in Oklahoma. $6.5 million is going to
go a long way to helping a lot of families."
DHS has the lowest error rate in its administration of the food-stamp program in the agency's history.
The accuracy rate is 94.4 percent, Johnson said.
"We have the highest accuracy rate we've every had, and we have the highest accuracy rate in the region," Johnson said.
"That is important considering we are on track to distribute nearly a half a billion dollars in food-stamp benefits in Oklahoma in 2009."
Tulsa County has a monthly average of about 57,143 residents receiving food stamps.
Last year, the county received about $71.4 million in food stamps among its low-income residents.
Eligibility, restrictions for food stamps
Eligibility for food stamps is based on 130 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of three to participate in the program, the monthly income cannot exceed about $1,900.
Items not allowed to be bought with food stamps include paper goods, cleaning products, household items, personal-care items, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vitamins or medicine and prepared foods, such as rotisserie chicken or concession-stand products.
Statewide, about 89 percent of recipients are children or working adults, DHS spokesman George Johnson said.

McPigg, Reagan is dead and so is his racist anti-poor rhetoric. Food stamps are much more stimulative than tax cuts for the rich.

With the percentage of voter apathy my guess is that over 50% of those who are on food stamps and/or welfare don't vote, period. They are neither democrat or republican.

Food stamps can be used for way too much. I do think the access card was a huge leap in the right direction. I wish they would issue food stamps like WIC. Vouchers for very specific items. If you are on food stamps you should be subjected to random drug tests and be put on a Dr monitored birth control plan. I know that not everyone receiving food stamps is a drug user sitting at home shooting out kids. Those steps would make it easier to get back on your feet. Most jobs require drug tests so why cant government assistance?

I've been acquainted with a few people who received food stamps. Now I'm aware of a single young woman (with 2 children) who receives food stamps--and lives in one of THA's apartments. She doesn't work. The youngest child's dad lives with them, but he's not on the lease. And, the guy doesn't work either. Does anyone know if reporting this situation will do any good???

I have a daughter, who until recently, was receiving food stamps, after her rugged individual, Republican husband pulled a Clinton on her and left her with the 2 children and a mountain of debt he ran up on her credit card. So, it's not all due to Democrats now, is it?
That sorry excuse for a human is now on his third wife and fourth child and he's still voting Republican! Don't even try that "moral high ground" bull on me!
Needless to say, she voted for Obama.

I am a democrat...have held a job since I was 10 years old. Right now I have two jobs so that I can support my republican mother/father in-law.
People often resort to comments based in stereotype because they refuse to take the time to really understand an issue...they read only to respond.

No one stopped to think about last year, when food stamp use was down, DHS started advertising food stamps on (Public Broadcasting) TV. Now food stamp use is up! Golly Gee, next DHS will request more tax money to hire more employees to administer their food stamp program. DUH!

I think a lot of your sound ridiculous. Mr McPigg, where is your SOURCE? You can run your mouth all you want but until there is cold hard FACTS and STATISTICS behind the crap you are spewing, it is just that- Crap! Same goes for the rest of you.
Anyways what this IS, is a show of the economic times. Maybe unemployment is still fairly low in Oklahoma, but wages have went down, as well as hours worked because of the economy.

Yeah, but I still don't idolize the dude. Which I believe was the statement that you made earlier. That it was wrong to cheer for someone who's income makes them wealthy.
Actually my income is a little closer to $7/hr, but at least I am proud enough to pay my own way and not ask for handouts. Can your $200k making rear say the same? lol...I didn't think so, you've spent so much time on this forum begging for guvment assistance that it's hard to believe that you've ever worked a day in your life.

I don't care how much other people make. I was raised that it isn't anybodies business but their own. I make as much as I can and I hope everybody else does to. What really pisses me off is people who don't make all they can and then want what other people earn. I know it takes hard work and a lot of time investment to better your lot in life, so quit whining and go make your own money, and keep out of MY pocket while your at it. Why can't we just tithe and call it good?

Welfare reform is the name of the game. Sure there are many that need food stamps UNTIL they get on their feet. Then they need to get off them. So many abuse this system as a way of life. I'm not talking about elderly, handicapped, etc. here either. Welfare/food stamps were initially created to aid until employed. Not as a permanent way of life! WELFARE REFORM!!!
