Bush and Clinton speak in Tulsa
Hundreds attend the fundraising event for The Salvation Army.
PHILANTHROPIC PARTNERS
Presidents George H.W. Bush:
They came to Tulsa to raise money for The Salvation Army.

Looking more relaxed and somewhat older than when they occupied the highest office in the land, former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton brought their considerable celebrity status to Tulsa on Saturday to raise money for The Salvation Army.
Security was tight. No cameras, recording devices or laptops were allowed on the floor of the BOK Center for the dinner and program.
Many state and local business and political leaders were among the nearly 1,000 people at the 6:30 p.m. dinner, prompting Bush to call the event a "name-dropper's paradise."
Several hundred more paid $125 for general admission tickets to the 7:30 p.m. program.
Each former president spoke for 20 minutes.
"People call us the odd couple," Bush said, "but just because you run against each other doesn't mean you're enemies. We think it sends a message that politics doesn't have to be mean.
"You don't have to see eye to eye on every issue to work together," he said.
"Helping someone else is far more important than politics."
"Nights like tonight are why I remain optimistic about the world."
He said volunteerism in America is at a 30-year high, boosted by teen volunteers.
"This economy is tough, but these figures are very encouraging. It's an inherent part of the American character to help others. This is the spirit of America. Volunteering helps connect us."
Clinton joked that he was consigned to spending his retirement years as a straight
man for Bush.
"George does this endearing schtick about getting older," he said. "It's ridiculous. He jumps out of airplanes, and I fall off steps."
On a more serious note, Clinton said this is a difficult time for America, when a lot of wealth has disappeared, and it has become more important to support work like The Salvation Army.
"In the future, all of us are going to have to do more of this, and not less," he said.
He said he thought the Oklahoma City bombing, and Oklahoma's response to it, broke a fever of cultural division in America and put the nation on a road back to psychological balance.
"We had got to the point in America where we thought our differences were more important than what we have in common," he said.
Skylar Johnson, a member of the Sapulpa Boys & Girls Club, a Salvation Army youth facility, was honored as the winner of an essay contest on how to give to the community.
Capt. Roy Williams, the Tulsa metro area commander of The Salvation Army, said the annual William Booth Society dinner will help provide 300,000 meals and emergency services for 7,000 needy families in the Tulsa area.
Bush and Clinton, who faced each other in the 1992 presidential election, often speak together to raise money for philanthropic causes.
They raised $1 billion for relief after a tsunami devastated Indonesia in December 2004. Later, the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund provided $135 million in grants to rebuild hurricane-devastated schools, libraries and housing in the New Orleans area. They are now raising money to help victims of last year's Hurricane Ike in the Gulf Coast area.

Clinton can see his handy work. His efforts with Janet Reno caused the Branch Dividian debacle and thus gave McVeigh the impetus to pull off the Murrah bombing. The local Waco sheriff had things under control until Reno went in blasting her way in the name of some gun charges. The Murrah was the final result. Funny thing is also that Clinton decided against beefing up airport and airplane security when the CIA and FBI told him that they had received tips about possible hijacking of airliners to be used as missiles. Clinton said since there was not date given in the tips he did not want to risk reducing civil liberties during his term. So we got the benefit of his inaction on 9/11 all in the name of saving civil liberties. We know how well those plans worked out, dont' we!

"The military tanks we used against the Branch Dividians were nothing more than a slightly beefed up rent-a-car from the U.S.Army". Janet Reno

If they're doing it (working together), why can't Oklahoma Dems and Repubs? But, what fun would that be?

It was a pleasant event. I enjoy seeing them together.
Neither of them currently hold an office.
Possibly that's the difference.
But
It would be nice if there was not such partisan party politics on BOTH sides for those that still do hold an elected office.

the odd couple did their part in creating this economic collapse. george h.w. bush's administration designed & engineered the nafta agreement & bill clinton signed it into law immediately after taking office. companies moved or built plants in mexico in order to take advantage of cheap labor & sent their products back to the u.s. to sell even to the point of using mexican trucks for delivery........"You don’t have to see eye to eye on every issue to work together,” Bush said. “Helping someone else is far more important than politics.” uuuuugh

Life is all about choices and no one can make up your mind but yourself IF you have control of it.
Two old men stumping for the benefit of others far less fortunate than themselves should not be disparaged nor politicized, only encouraged among the rest of us.
Both made mistakes in their lives and in their presidencies but the grace of God and/or time requires us to forgive and forget and support them now in their American goodness.

The function last night had absolutely nothing to do with politics and everything to do stepping up and helping those who have been effected by the sinking economy. What they did together last night was a good thing and I for one thank them for that.

Here are these two leaders who are trying to show that people can get along despite differnces. And then most of you people come out of your garbage cans to start slinging trash. This is very typically American, very typically Tulsan. The problems with this country do not rest on the shoulders of government, it rests on the shoulders of its citizens. Your comments reveal exactly what is wrong with the U.S.

A Democratic congress passed NAFTA, the first Bush didn't sign it, Bill did. You need to throw your barbs at him, not Bush.

Hey Tulsan 74106, you just don't see "automatic writing" on here these days. Very interesting. I see the spirit communicating through your keyboard is blaming every problem in the world on GW Bush. That's pretty absurd, don't you think?
This country's demise started with men dead long before the Bush family was known. The latest few decades have seen our moral and ethical positions sink to an unbelievable degree under the tutelage of men like Carter, Clinton, and the Bush clan. It is obvious to anyone who bothers to look that a plan has been in motion for decades now. And it is equally obvious that Obama is the last phase of the plan.
Don't believe me? Think I'm mad? That's okay. Just watch what happens to our conutry over the next two or three years. I'm surprised your psychic connection hasn't informed you what to expect. I hope you're ready for what happens in this country and around the world over the next couple of years. I know you'll be tempted to blame it all on W. But I don't think you'll get many supporters. Our shockingly rapid demise will be the obvious result of actions and inactions by our current administration.
Tell the spirit world I said hello....
