Number of food-stamp recipients sets record again

OKLAHOMA CITY — The number of people receiving food stamps continues to climb, hitting another record for May.

The Commission for Human Services on Tuesday got an overview of the increase.

As of May, 474,971 people were receiving food stamps, also called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is paid for with federal dollars.

"It is an all-time record," DHS Director Howard Hendrick, told the commission.

That figure is 16.2 percent more than it was a year ago, he said.

In the last 60 days, about 30,000 food-stamp recipients have been added, which is a little more than 500 a day, Hendrick said.

Still, Oklahoma has not see the dramatic increases that other states have seen, DHS spokesman George Johnson said.

But the state is not insulated from the national recession, he said.

Unlike Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, which has a 60-month lifetime limit, food stamps have no time limit, Johnson said.

Officials are not able to project when the increase will plateau and begin to drop, nor is there an "average profile" of a person who receives food stamps, he said.

Eligibility for food stamps is based on income, the number of people in the family and other factors, Johnson said.

Delivered electronically, food stamps cover only edible food, and not other items such as alcohol, toilet paper
or aluminum foil, he noted.

Well with the city furloughing and rolling back salaries then more numbers will be added to those statistics. Not all city workers are making those six figures. You will be surprised at the number of city workers getting government assistance but at least they are trying to be productive.

Oh, before Obama gets out of office I figure about half of the US will be on food stamps.

This isn't funny, Moses. Lots of people who have worked hard for years have lost their jobs and trying to make ends meet.

What this article does not mention is the amount of food stamps an individual receives. Of the people I know receiving food stamps, most of them get around $10 or $15 a month.

Not only have people lost jobs, some retirees lost much of the money they were counting on for retirement and have had to return to work. And the pickin's are slim.

We have sunk to a new low when we would rather cast disparaging words to the poor when what they truly need is food.

The Commission for Human Services is adding more than 500 a day????

They sure are efficient. Impossible to believe a gov. agency can be that efficient.

We need to start checking the Pakistani quik-shops to see if they're selling their food stamps under the radar for cash again.

2ndjoyce, that is because for years the so-called "poor" were men and women too lazy to get off their fat butts and get a job or an education. The men were too busy enjoying their alcoholic beverages and/or doing drugs and the women were too busy having babies out of wedlock by different men to get a job and work.

Consequently, welfare, food stamps, medicaid have have made your average, hard-working people who supports themselves and don't depend on the government to support them feeling cycnical.

In 1971, for about 4 months I was on unemployment and food stamps. I was divorced with a 5 year old son to support. My ex wouldn't pay child support and half the time was unemployed. I lost my job so I had to live on unemployment and food stamps for 4 months until I got another job. Back then food stamp recipients had to pay for part of their food stamps. I paid $24 a month for $58 worth of food stamps. I was so happy to get another job and be off those food stamps, I found it a very humilating and embarrassing situation.

some people have been on welfare for years without trying to better themselves. I believe in helping the poor and the needy....everyone needs help sometimes...but people who HAVE NEVER worked and are able bodied SHOULD BE WORKING..I am not speaking about people who have lost jobs etc. You guys know who I am speaking of.....

So according to all the comments its all Obama's fault. However, its not any presidents fault, but of course most people don't understand economics either. Even if we could attribute this to a president we need to remember that it all started under the Bush administration. I see Obama trying to ease this hard hitting recession, not make it worse. But then again, I also think you are going to be of one or the other opinion, depending on which national news channel you watch.

the craziest thing is...

the headline for this article:
"Number of food-stamp recipients sets record again"

the article listed right above this in the news section:

"Tribes' Casino revenue rises again...."

makes me wonder....

I'm a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me......

Sorry I upset some of you!
It's not that I wouldn't have qualified for government hand outs through my life but that is not how I was raised. My family would never have considered welfare, section 8 housing, food stamps, etc.
We always had a garden in the summer time and plenty of fruit trees in the yard.
I have been laid off three times, twice from oil companys and once as a computer programer for a large warehouse.
To get back on my feet I took jobs, sometimes working three, that I didn't necessarily want but paid the bills while I looked for permanent employment.
I know what I can do when times are bad. You just pull yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again!
I'm not better than anyone else, just a different way of looking at things.

You can solve the food and animal control problem at the same time. Just publish recipies for dog, cat, pigeon, and snake, and then let people catch and eat any animals not on a lease or in a private yard.

Animal skins are also good for making belt buckles.

Isn't metal a little more traditional for making a belt buckle? It's sturdier too.

For variety we sometimes like to cover our metal belt buckle with an animal skin to show how powerful a hunter we are, thus impressing the female of the species with our ability to provide for her and her children.

This is a function of the theory of natural selection in which the male of the species wants to be the one selected.
