Boy, 12, in custody after stabbing child, police say

A 12-year-old boy was taken into custody Thursday evening after the child attacked an acquaintance and stabbed him with a steak knife, police said.

The boys had gotten into a fist fight about 6:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of East 52nd Place North when one pulled out the knife and stabbed the other in the shoulder, Capt. Ryan Perkins said.

The injured child's parent called for help, and officers arrested the other boy on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon. He is in the Juvenile Detention Center, Perkins said.

Although he's seen similar cases involving young children in the past, Perkins said they are relatively rare.

"It's certainly concerning that this kid was walking around with a knife in his pocket," he said.

The victim's injuries are not life-threatening, Perkins said.

Overnight shootings leave two people injured

Tulsa police are investigating overnight shootings that injured two people, but they say they have few leads in either case.

Officers were dispatched early Thursday to Hillcrest Medical Center to talk to a 16-year-old who had been shot in front of a house in the 100 block of South Yorktown Avenue, police said.

The victim said he had been shot by one of the occupants of a car with at least two people in it about 1:45 a.m.

His injury was not life threatening. He claimed not to have seen the occupants and said he couldn't give officers a description of the vehicle, police said.

Officers had been dispatched about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday to a shooting at a residence in the 12000 block of East 23rd Street. The victim said he had been shot in the arm during a fight there.

Officers reported that the victim was uncooperative and that he drove himself to St. Francis Hospital, where he argued with medical personnel. He then left, saying he was going to Hillcrest.

Officers said they had no information on the shooter.

Presentation will take kids across the country

The Tulsa Historical Society is hosting a lecture Saturday by two teachers who retraced the cross-country trip of brothers Bud and Temple Abernathy when the boys were only 9 and 5.

The free presentation is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Historical Society, 2445 S. Peoria Ave.

Teachers Melody Aufill and Donna McChesney read the book "Bud & Me, the True Adventures of the Abernathy Boys" to their classes in Yale. The book recounts the cross-country trip the brothers took between 1909 and 1911.

The teachers decided to retrace the trip themselves. They started in southwest Oklahoma and traveled to Santa Fe, N.M., New York City and San Francisco. The 44-day trip went through 23 states and included visits to Washington, D.C., Mount Rushmore, Great Salt Lake, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and Abraham Lincoln's birthplace.

The teachers also attended the Abernathy family reunion in Frederick, where they met Temple Abernathy's daughter and granddaughter.

Hallett man given 25-year term in wife's slaying

PAWNEE — A Hallett man pleaded no contest last week to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with his wife's death and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Mark Paul Bixler, 40, entered the plea in Pawnee County District Court. He also was fined $10,000, records show. Bixler did not receive credit for time served, and no part of his sentence was suspended.

The beaten and stabbed body of Michelle Bixler, 40, was found in July 2008 in the couple's home.

Woman reportedly meant to make belt of dog's skin

MUSKOGEE — A Muskogee woman told investigators that she planned to make a belt out of the hide of a puppy she and a friend are charged with killing and skinning, officials said.

Krystal Lynn Lewis, 23, told authorities she decided to kill her Jack Russell terrier puppy because she couldn't afford to care for it, Muskogee County Sheriff's Deputy George Roberson said.

Investigators think a more likely scenario is that she decided to kill the dog because the animal was a gift from former lover with whom she doesn't get along, Robinson said.

Lewis' friend, Austin Michael Mullins, 26, shot the puppy 10 times June 9 with a .22-caliber pistol, Roberson said. Lewis then skinned the puppy at her apartment and nailed the hide to a board. A caller alerted authorities with a tip to Crime Stoppers.

A Muskogee County judge ordered mental competency testing for the pair, whom prosecutors charged Tuesday with one felony count each of cruelty to animals, court records show.

Mullins and Lewis are in the Muskogee County Jail with bail set at $25,000 each.

Jay teacher is fired for alleged moral turpitude

Correction
This story originally contained incorrect information. The story has been corrected.

JAY — The school board has voted 3-2 to fire an elementary school physical education teacher for alleged moral turpitude, Superintendent Duane Thomas said Thursday.

Thomas would not specify what led to the firing of Cecil Weeks. But Chuck Shipley, a lawyer for one of three school employees who made allegations against the teacher, said the action was based on indecent-exposure allegations the women raised.

Weeks, who worked for the district for 19 years, received the Teacher of the Year award in 1998.

He can appeal the school board's decision, Thomas said.

If I know St Francis emergency room, it was the wait. I waited 9 hrs last time I was sent there by a doctor. The waiting room was full of people. Mostly of one nationality. Bet they had insurance too!

It really is sad when you start getting used to seeing news of a shooting a day. What exactly are Tulsa Police doing to stop gang violence?

ThatGuyWho: The kid wouldn't tell the police anything about who shot him. He probably could have given names, addresses, etc., but opted for the "No Snitchin". Police need information, without it they cannot find the bad guys. Many in North Tulsa have decided not to cooperate with police, and are paying a dear price for that decision.

Did you read the story. What do you expect the police to do when they get zero cooperation from the victims? Just go out and randomly arrest someone? The police, unlike the criminals, have to follow a thing called our bill of rights. It is what seperates us from the non democratic coountries in the world. I sometimes wonder who is ahead in the race?

I can't help but wonder if it isn't frustrations like these that cause troopers to attack EMTs? There was finally someone they could get their hands on, so it all bubbled to the surface in one big eruption. I still don't condone that particular action, but given the mental profile of people that become officers of the law, I can understand it! Sometimes I think we should just shoot them all and let God sort it out!

The shooting out east 24th I bet involved Hispanics. Is that the nationality you were referring to, DontLikeItDontReadIt?

I agree with everyone, when people won't give the police info, it ties the police's hands. But the losers are the people who won't divulge what they know, as the old saying goes: "they are cutting off their nose to spite their face". What idiots.

With a rate of about 3 in 10 kids dropping out of school and no draft to scoop them up and make them accountable, responsible citizens; we can only hope to tread water.

It isn't just Tulsa that's seeing this kind of behavior and crime. Every major metropolitan area is under attack.

It was near the end of the 1990's when gangs almost took over Portland. They're still cleaning up the mess there. Phoenix has an entirely different set of problems with latinos kidnapping each other, torturing the victims and their families, and demanding ransom.

We're not being responsible as a nation. Those of us that are adults need to demand that our representatives take action to fix these ills... NOW!

Seriously, i graduated from a good school on the south side in 96. same problems, just more rich kids to buy more drugs, guns, etc. they'll either grow out of it or go to prison. the cops can't be everywhere all of the time. go vigilante on the punks if you see something wrong in your neighborhood.

When I first moved down here to Boswell, I was shocked that EVERYBODY owned a gun, good kids still get told "I'm gonna wear you out" and the kids who DON"T GET TOLD THAT are the problem kids', the one's that are the reason for EVERYONE owning guns....

Gun's aren't the answer but they sure do make the problem kids' question what they are about to do....

I'm OK with guns nowadays....I still don't own one, BUT ALL MY NEIGHBOR'S DO !!!! Ol' Henry put down a couple of stray dogs the other day for killing his chickens, they may not have been the one's who actually killed his chickens' but people are making sure their dogs don't run loose on our street anymore.....

This is totally disgusting. How could anyone do this to an innocent animal, especially a seven week old puppy? Shooting and skinning a puppy and nailing the hide on the wall? Planning to make a belt out of it? Whatever punishment these people receive can in no way be severe enough. What is wrong with people?
