OKLAHOMA CITY — A state lawmaker is urging Oklahomans to sign a morality proclamation "to acknowledge the need for a national awakening of righteousness."
Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, has called a news conference for noon Thursday on the first floor of the state Capitol to discuss the "Oklahoma Citizen's Proclamation for Morality," which might be sent to Gov. Brad Henry, President Barack Obama and the state's congressional delegation.
"We believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis," a draft of the proclamation states.
"This nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery."
The proclamation, which cites numerous quotes from the country's founders, states that those who sign are alarmed that the U.S. government is "forsaking the rich Christian heritage upon which this nation was built."
The proclamation notes that Obama scaled back the National Day of Prayer events but signed a proclamation declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.
It states that the signers are deeply disturbed by the president's disregard for "the biblical admonitions to live
clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior."
The proclamation calls for God to grant a "national awakening of righteousness and Christian renewal as we repent of our great sin."
Kern, who made headlines in 2008 when she said homosexuality is a greater threat to the United States than terrorism, said the proclamation merely makes a statement and does not place blame on the Obama administration or a particular group of people.
"According to the Bible, homosexuality is just like adultery, murder or any number of sins," Kern said. "It is an immoral behavior and so he gave credence to that but wouldn't acknowledge our national day of prayer by honoring it with his presence."
Toby Jenkins, president of Tulsa-based Oklahomans for Equality, said thousands of Oklahomans — many of whom are heterosexual and religious — recently celebrated the contributions and commitment of the lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual community.
Jenkins said Kern "is outside of the mainstream for Oklahoma."
Kern is entitled to her interpretation of the Bible and sacred texts, he said, but she is not open to any discussion outside her views.
"There are many interpretations that do not see things the way she does," Jenkins said.
Kern said details of how signatures for the proclamation will be gathered are still being worked out, but she said she hopes that the proclamation will be available for online signatures.

Please tell me that this is a Saturday Night Live skit! If it isn't now then it will be soon! Is there any hope that the right wingers will cease making Oklahoma and Christianity look stupid? And was it just a rumor or isn't this woman's son gay? And doesn't the Bible say women can not speak in Church? How come they can speak in the legislature? And aren't women supposed to keep their heads covered? The New Testament says if a woman has no shame to go around without a cover then she should be shorn so everyone will know she is a prostitute. Sally where is your burka? Would you rather look like a terrorist or {according to the Apostle Paul} a whore? Actually with your current haircut you look like a lesbian! What is up with that?
Seriously...if torturing and murdering and breaking treaties with the Indians didn't out rage their God and slavery did not kill our economy...and the war on Iraq did not do it then how does people having sex have so much power to take us down? I think we will find that immorality is not a new thing? And surely the way our government handled it's finances could not have had anything to do with it cause we all no the Party of Family values and moral majority were in charge of the checkbook then.

See this resolution will counter act all the good my 1 man stimulus package has done. I've been going to a lot of strip clubs, bars, and casinos. Every dollar counts, and the way I see it I'm keeping hundreds of bouncers, card dealers, and single-mom's employed. Everyone should feel free to join my program

Shame on District 84 for voting this church lady from the nether regions into office. I thought OKC was a little more foward thinking than that.
Her website sums it up with the lead-off of "KERNservative". I guess humility is something she's seriously lacking in, as well as compassion and understanding. Well Sally, we all don't live in your narrow minded little underworld.
Ms. Kern; you are pathetic in your attempt at at staying in the news at the cost of Oklahoma's reputation to try to further your political career. Spew all the hatred you want, it just exposes your true self to everyone outside the 84th district!

Although I doubt Sally and I would agree on much regarding our faith, she is making a valid point about our sinfulness having a direct impact on the condition of our society, and I would extend that even further to include the condition of the universe. When we embrace sin and death, we invite suffering, as a direct and indirect consequence.
One direct consequence is business men, like Meydoff, doing unbelievably callous things that destroy lives for their own personal gain. It takes a stone cold heart to commmit such horrible acts on one another. This makes life directly miserable for us all.

Slatz, all of our laws are based on a moral idea of what we believe if right and wrong. Most cultures share a similar view of most of the values we've legislated into law, since God has written His Law on the hearts of all humankind, but there are some differences from culture to culture.
Most of the founding fathers were protestant Christians, not universalists. Yes there were deists among them, but to suggest they were the majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence of Constitution is false.

How about we recognize the separation of church and state.
How about we quit trying to make religion into law. After all isn't that what the terrorist want? to make their religion law??? just saying.

Politico, so you are for the cap & tax?
Do you realize that part of that bill would require homeowners that want to sell their home, their home would have to meet strict cap & tax rules before being sold? Furnace and a/c, all appliances, insulation, roofs, etc. would have to meet energy efficient strict rules? If they don't, before you could sell your home, you would have to replace your a/c, furnace, etc. with "approved" replacements. So in other words, unless you already have your home energy efficient, you would be out a lot of money before being able to sell your home.
This is just one of many expensive strict rules in the cap & tax bill. Now, are you still for it?

Oh...okay.
I guess the next step is a law that will require the citizens to do the same.
And that will be followed by a requirement that they are of a certain religion.
And then, if that's not enough, the rights of the citizens will be taken away.
We'll no longer be able to read, watch and/or listen to what we want, if it fails a "morality" standard.

With all due respect, if the Christian faith works for you then I'm happy for you.
Myself, I find my greatest strength in the words of Torah and following the path of Adonai.
And I'm sure there are plenty of other Oklahomans who are happy with their chosen faith (or, lack thereof).
Who here on Earth is so all-knowing to say that your faith, my faith or anyone’s is THE right way?
Certainly not Rep. Kern...and many of you posters on this board.
We'll all know...in the end.
…
In the mean time, history has proved time and again that legislating morality never works.
As for those of you who are quick to add the “WWJD” slogan, allow me to remind you that Jesus was Jewish.
Most likely he would be appalled at some of things many of you espouse as being “Christian”.
Perhaps you should spend more time cleaning the dirt on your own back doorstep before you tackle the rest of the world.
Parting shot:

But isn't it amoral to lie? Two quotes she uses in her proclamation, one by "James Madison" and the other by "Patrick Henry," were never said by either man. Typical Repub: Kern can't rely on the truth and must depend on lies to prove a point.
