Video: Morality rally draws protesters
Rep. Sally Kern says economic woes are caused by "debauchery."

Editorial: Church lady: Righteousness, Rep. Kern-style
Kern wants Sooners to sign morality proclamation
OKLAHOMA CITY — A circuslike atmosphere broke out Thursday during a rally to launch Rep. Sally Kern's proclamation for morality.
Protesters repeatedly interrupted Kern, R-Oklahoma City, and her supporters, chanting for the separation of church and state and calling Kern and her supporters hypocrites.
A crowd of as many as 250 Kern supporters and protesters attended the event on the first floor of the state Capitol.
Among Kern's supporters were Republican Reps. Mike Reynolds of Oklahoma City and Lisa Billy of Lindsay.
The proclamation, the bulk of which was written by Kern, calls for a national awakening of righteousness.
"We believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis," the proclamation states. "This nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery."
The proclamation can be read and signed by going online to
tulsaworld.com/reclaimoklahoma
.
C.S. Thornton, deputy director of the ACLU of Oklahoma, said the proclamation is riddled with factual inaccuracies.
During the rally, chants of "shame on you" were interrupted by the singing of "God Bless America," only to be droned out by calls for everyone to love their neighbor.
Critics accused Kern of using state resources to promote religion. The proclamation makes several references to religion.
Kern said that as a state representative, her decisions are based on religious beliefs. She said she is entitled to use state resources to get her message out.
"We need people in government who know first and foremost they are going to answer to their creator and then secondly to their people," Kern said.
She said she felt that the state Capitol was the proper venue to launch her drive to gather signatures.
Brittany Novotny disagreed, saying Kern used the Capitol grounds and property to advance her particular branch of Christianity, something that violates the state constitution.
During an interview, Novotny was chastised by a Kern supporter for interrupting Kern's event. She responded by reading a portion of the state constitution.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Pete Norwood said protesters did not have a permit to be present.
He said no one was arrested, but signs carried by protesters were secured.
"I can't stop them from having a voice without civil disruption," Norwood said. "It would be an embarrassment. I will not embarrass my state."
Kern said her proclamation blames no one and is not legislation but merely a statement. If anyone is to blame, it would be the church for not doing more, Kern said.
She said protesters who interrupted the ceremony were "intolerant" of others.
Sara Beam of Tulsa said the proclamation disgraces the First Amendment by situating Christianity as the national religion.
House staff members put out an advisory announcing the ceremony and a press release on the actual event.
"Members of both parties frequently use House media for press conferences and releases on local, state and national issues," said Jennifer Monies, a spokesman for House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa. "This is not anything out of the ordinary. It is not an inappropriate use of staff resources to help a legislator make a policy-based political statement."
The proclamation will be sent to the state's congressional delegation, President Barack Obama and others, Kern and her supporters said.

Thank you Capt. Norwood for letting the protesters speak. Yes, it would have been an embarrassment had anyone been hurt in a scuffle. Yes, it would have been an embarrassment if it looked like OHP was supporting a religious agenda.
Whose paid her salary while she devised this proclamation?

I think there is no doubt that lack of morals played a part in many of our nation's current problems, but that doesn't mean we should have elected officials telling us to look to Christianity or any other particular religion to save us all. Especially the type of religion that foolishly considers same-sex marriage a form of "debauchery," that is paralleled with child abuse and sex trafficking.

My Rate of Return in 401k was -39% last year because a same sex couple got hitched and millions are unemployed because so many of those "traditional marriages" ended in divorce.
Thanks a bunch 'merica... and thank you Sally, for clearing that up.

I'm sure the lady has good intentions, but asking a politician to sign a statement that basically says he or she won't act like a politician is a lot like saying a snake won't bite you just because you didn't intend to do it harm.
Signing a statement is over the top - how about a bill establishing a season?

Sally Kern represents a clear and present danger to America! All you need to do is look at what the Taliban did to Afghanistan to realize what kind of damage an out of control hypocritical sanctimonious religion can do to a country! Talibangelicals need to go live in Afghanistan if they want to pick and choose G-d's laws while claiming to be some sort of authority on why "elitist greed" ruined our country!

I sadly admit she is right on the count of our nation being immoral. I am proud to be an American and would not wish to leave this grand nation; however, we are way too free at times. Take a look at our crime rate for those statistics and the number of repeats still living on the streets. What amazes me is how anyone, no matter their political or non-political position, can ever claim the right to throw stones! I do the best I can to walk the walk and not just talk the talk, but in the end it's between us and God and not between us and Sally.

Wow ! Christianity is being compared to the Taliban. While I agree with her thoughts on morality, I'm not sure politics is the correct way to go about it; I'm pretty sure that's our responsibility to proclaim Christ but His Word didn't say anything about proclamations. You cannot force people to accept any spiritual condition - it must be a personal choice.

Be careful what you ask for ...
If any of us were hired to do a specific job for a private company, but used that paid time and access to market our own interests instead - we'd not only be fired, but probably be sued.
Get these sanctimonious thumpers out of public office.
They'll probably erect public stantions soon to secure and humiliate sinners - maybe near the 10 commandments monument.

As a citizen of the United States, she is entitled to speak her mind and worship whomever she pleases.
And to the death, I defend and support her right to do so.
However...
As an elected representative of the people of Oklahoma, she does NOT speak for me, nor does she represent my religion.
And as an elected person, she has crossed the line of church/state separation by promoting one religion.
I find this deplorable and NO different than what the Taliban wants:
subjugation of the people.
...
A sad day in Oklahoma and America.

She thinks Oklahoma (of all places, OKLAHOMA?!?) has lost its religious roots. Sure, the buckle of the Bible belt... the reddest of red states. I guess she's looking for a complete theocracy. Throw out the constitution and never mind the majority of folks who think she's a whack job. Forget the fact that even those who don't subscribe to her religious beliefs are still citizens that are due representation. By God, Oklahoma needs to be even more religious than it is already.

We, the Literate and Reasonable People of the United States who have avoided or escaped the sort of childhood indoctrination that would lead a person to believe that what is done in private with his or her genitals may trigger God’s wrath in the form of tsunamis, terrorist attacks, and economic recession, invoking a morality based on reducing suffering, that the citizens of this country may be free from the enforcement of the brutal, sexist, homophobic and often silly morality of the Bible; to thwart Christians and their co-religionists as attempts are made to pass off dogma as universal morality and erode the separation of church and state; do establish this proclamation and call upon all those who have ever sassed their parents (Det 21:20-21), disobeyed their husbands (Eph 5:22), picked up sticks on a Saturday (Nmbrs 15: 32-36), or worn anything made of a cotton polyester blend (Lev 19:19) to join with us in protecting morality from Christians who attempt to infect it with their perception of what God told them is bad via the Bible as opposed to actual injustice and suffering.
WHEREAS, “…the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion…” (Treaty of Tripoli – Signed by President John Adams); and
WHEREAS, “The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg” (Thomas Jefferson); and
WHEREAS, “A government cannot be premised on the belief that all persons are created equal when it asserts that God prefers some” (U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun); and
WHEREAS, “...texts from the source we call Holy Scripture have been used in the past to defend the divine right of kings and to oppose the Magna Carta; to condemn Galileo and to assert that the sun does indeed rotate around the earth; to justify slavery, segregation and apartheid; to keep women from being educated, entering the professions, voting or being ordained; to justify war, to persecute and kill Jews; to condemn other world religions; and to continue the oppression and rejection of gay and lesbian people." (Bishop John Shelby Spong); and
WHEREAS, “Secularists have no desire to extol the Bible above its merits, nor to depreciate it below its deserts. We gladly admit that it contains some useful precepts; but these, as a rule, are intermixed with so many teachings of an injurious character that their beauty is often overshadowed and their utility annulled. Its coarse language in many places renders it unfit for general perusal, and destroys its value as a standard for every-day life.” (Charles Watts);
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the reasonable citizens of this country, solemnly declare that a system of morality based solely on the Bible would most certainly be considered evil by today’s moral standards: and
BE IT RESOLVED that the HOPE to which we cling, that the laws and morals of these United States will not devolve to the point of Christian theocracy, rests upon our constitutional religious freedom, the separation of church and state; and a thorough reading of the Bible.

Even I will agree that Rep. Kern has gone too far this time.
Not so much because I disagree entirely with what she (and John Adams, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and others) have said, but simply because it's pointless. Not only will not accomplish the goals that she hopes, it will do the exact opposite.

Good Job Sally Kern!! It is obvious from statements left here by other readers that you are definitely right!! People don't realize that the 'separation of Church and State' is NOT in the Constitution! It was in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danberry Baptists promising them that Government would not infringe upon the rights of the Church. Dear Sally,
I am willing to believe your intentions are righteous but your actions are not! I also serve a mighty God! When you continually use the words...invoking Almighty God ...you make me very nervous. There is no humility in your words or the actions of the Reclaiming America Group that you are representing while holding public office.
Our God is not a cosmic bellboy who the "righteous" can call down to set the "evildoers" straight.{no pun intended}
While you are proclaiming this return to what you deem righteous...what are your suggestions for how the American people should deal with the transgressors? I am not being facetious...I really would like to know! Surely since you have done God's work of separating the wheat from the tares...what exactly should be done now with the tares. Maybe concentration camps for homosexuals and adulterers? Public executions for sexual impurity? How will you go about administering God's judgement on the unjust if they have not broken any law? Change the laws? Will being a democrat become illegal? Maybe eliminate the Supreme court and replace it with group of Spiritual Counsel maybe from your group that your working with now? Divine appointments?
It is easy to usurp God's authority on the earth and shine the light on evil so that you can stamp it out but be careful...our God is a jealous God and He will not share his position with you nor will he take advice from you.
You remind me of the time when I invited a surprise guest for dinner and asked my children to start dinner and clean up the living room. When I arrived at home I was horrified to see that in an effort to help me they decided to clean out the closets instead. There were piles of useless junk everywhere and dinner was not on the stove. My guest arrived and the evening was in shambles. Did my kids want to please me? Yes! But I needed them to obey me!
Sally, you are not responsible for the evil in the world and I have never seen any Biblical dispensation for the organizing of a Spiritual Task force to enforce God's will on the earth. His Word is very clear on what He wants you to do and it is LOVE Him...Love your enemies...Love your neighbors...feed the hungry...shelter the homeless...pray without ceasing...tend to the widow and the orphan in her distress,,,judge not..visit the sick and the imprisoned. Nowhere in there are there commandments outlining the rules for heretic hunting. That is an evil sport...and an abomination to God. He gives liberty....I have liberty in Christ! Look up the word liberty! Freedom is a beautiful thing. Stop trying to rewrite God's assignment for yourselves and just concentrate on the one He gave you. Anything else would show your works to be an effort to please man and not God. Surely you would not want Him to be invoked while you are steadily doing the wrong job?? That would be foolish and surely you are no fool.

Sally Kerns doesn't mean well and she knows exactly what she is doing. I am a Christian and this stuff is scary that she can influence people in this manner. She is the terrorist of our world. This woman is dangerous to our society. I want to know what she will do to help Oklahoma fix our roads, streets, bridges, schools, help fund more police on the street with the underfunded budget from eight years plus and this crisis. I am not worried about her extreme and scary wedges issues. They don't help my family pay the bills with the high cost of insurance, and everything else.
She thinks this will help her in Oklahoma because people here want that sort of stuff. This could just backfire on this woman. This incites problems we do not need at this time in our lives when people are trying to figure out how to feed their families or take medicine.

On the other hand we have people like Davis Koresh and Jim Jones who serve as examples of what happens when we take religion too seriously.
I for one would like to see religion left in the churches and our politicians taking care of the states business, like trying to draw jobs to Oklahoma, appropriating money to fix our roads and bridges, provide funding for police and fire departments, and balancing the budget,etc...

This is the crux of the problem, and she and the gang she rode in with need to be stopped from this defiant mockery. This is the kind of behavior that makes Americans look like fools in the world when we spout our freedoms and cite our constitutional government as the "best in the world". It is that, and I have spent 20 years living in several foreign country (many of which really do have a better grip on problems than we do, but that's an argument for another day); nevertheless, she is interjecting her beliefs on government time, and is drawing government wages to do so, paid for by taxpayers - each one of whom is protected under the Constitution from having government representatives declare any religion over us. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence— continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. I have a curse for Silly Sally and all her followers: May they get what they wish for...
The year is 2024 and Governor Kern has been Head Inquisitor and Defender of the Faith for 20 years. On a quiet neighborhood street in south Tulsa, Joe Bob prepares to spend a peaceful Sunday afternoon at his favorite pastime. Flipping on the big screen tv in the living room and tuning into the game, he settles in his big comfy recliner and carefully balances a can of beer on his belly. Just as he digs his hand into the 8 quart bowl of potato chips at his side the front door is smashed open and falls to the floor in a tangle of splinters and dust. When the haze clears Joe Bob sees to his horror that he has been discovered by Trooper Martin, transferred from the OHP to the Oklahoma Christian Taliban. Joe Bob is unceremoniously hauled downtown to the former BOK Center, now the Kern Center for Spiritual Readjustment. Joe Bob is shackled to one of the endless rows of pews. In the darkened room, the only perceptible light is the huge viewing screen. The face of Dear Leader Sally Kern, the harsh light glinting off her steel framed glasses, fills the screen....

Wow. Just wow.

We believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis," the proclamation states. "This nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery."
I agree that she maybe extreme but unfortunately she is right on the money. We have the worst public school system in history. I challenge everyone to go into a secondary public school and then vist a prison. See if you can tell the difference in the students actions, mannerisms or speech compared to the convicts. People care more about a drug overdosed pop star than they do about their freedom being eroded by the liars and con artist in Washington.
Look at the popular music, C-rap. It is all about money, treating women like possessions, drugs, crime, and rebellion to authority. Most parents don't agree with any of the garbage of this music but yet continuously purchase it for thier children.

Mr. Goodbob, that was brilliant, hilarious, and inspiring. I gladly sign your compact (representing all four of the sinful groups you name). :)
By the way, all, Article I Section I-2 of the Oklahoma Constitution states:
"Perfect toleration of religious sentiment shall be secured, and no inhabitant of the State shall ever be molested in person or property on account of his or her mode of religious worship; and no
religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights. Polygamous or plural marriages are forever prohibited."
Ms. Kern, please note that you are violating the Oklahoma Constitution by threatening our perfect tolerance of religious sentiment and that same-sex marriage -- unlike plural marriage -- was actually not prohibited by our "Founding Fathers."

Typical Tulsa World bad journalism:
No mention of how few conta-protesters there really were.
Well over 200 citizens make an orderly event and TW finds a few lefties and make it look like they're the groundswell movement.

Shame on District 84 for voting this church lady from the nether regions into office. I thought OKC was a little more foward thinking than that.
Her website sums it up with the lead-off of "KERNservative". I guess humility is something she's seriously lacking in, as well as compassion and understanding. Well Sally, we all don't live in your narrow minded little underworld.
Ms. Kern; you are pathetic in your attempt at at staying in the news at the cost of Oklahoma's reputation to try to further your political career. Spew all the hatred you want, it just exposes your true self to everyone outside the 84th district!

Classic uneducated OKIE redneck politican - confusing "moral" with "Christian religious dogma".
Why can't we elect officials in this state who have a decent education? Is it because we require only a high school education for legislators?

Cooldaddy said "Sally Kern means well. She has a solid point in what she's saying."
Yeah, well, Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong meant well, too.
