With cars honking their horns in support, some 200 children marched down Denver Avenue Monday morning for universal health care coverage.

“These children are being taught to be an advocate for millions of kids who don’t have health insurance,” said state Rep. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa.

The event was organized by the Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League, and children from Tulsa’s two Freedom Schools, day camps and other groups gathered at the Tulsa County Election Board early with signs proclaiming “Save our babies” and “Our kids need universal health care.”

“This is bridging the gap for all the kids in our community,” said Opa Chaney, who is the league’s employment case manager.

The children were set to end their march at the Page Belcher Federal Building. The march is part of a national effort by the Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools program.
