Carter will speak at regional meeting in Norman

NORMAN — Former President Jimmy Carter will be the guest speaker at the first New Baptist Covenant Midwest Region Meeting in early August.
The meeting is set for Aug. 6-7 at the Norman Convention Center and Embassy Suites Hotel.
The Rev. Bruce Prescott, the meeting's coordinator, said not just Baptists will join the gathering, but that people of other Christian denominations and other faiths also are expected to attend.
Prescott, who is executive director of Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists, said the goal of the meeting is to inspire Baptists and others to unify to help others in the community. It is not, he said, an attempt to start a "super organization."
"Some people think this is to try to create a new convention, but that's wrong. We're trying to figure out how to get people to work together and how to meet the needs of the community," he said.
The gathering in Norman is one of several regional meetings organized after the initial New Baptist Covenant meeting in 2008 in Atlanta. About 16,000 Baptists from around the U.S., Canada and Mexico met for that first gathering that they said represented the commitment of more than 20 million Baptists in North America to fulfill their obligations as Christians to promote peace with justice, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless, among other things.
Carter, who spearheaded the 2008 national gathering, will be a guest speaker at the regional meeting in Norman, along with other prestigious Oklahomans who are Baptists, including
Gov. Brad Henry and former Congressman J.C. Watts. Others include the Rev. Major Jemison, the Rev. Wade Burleson and the Rev. George Young.
Prescott said he has been pleased with the number of Oklahomans who have already registered. He said others from the region — Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas and Kansas — have been slower, but registrations are now trickling in.
He said it is important to note that New Baptist Covenant is not a political movement.
"We're trying to get people to get along so we can do some things together."

Jimmy Carter is a faithful and honest man with a lot of integrity.
Was just in way over his head as President.

Carter was a good humane man. How many ex presidents take a week every year to help built homes for the poor with Habilitat for Humanity.

He was an honest man, I believe, but I wish he would keep his mouth shut about the middle east.

I just read President Carter's latest book, "We Can Have Peace in the Middle East." Almost no one --- NO ONE --- has the background, personal friendships, and diplomatic skills of Pres. Carter. It is unfortunate that many who have not read his history of this area, nor studied, visited and followed intently the events of the Middle East, as has Jimmy Carter, will open their mouth about things they haven't the credentials to understand.
