Heroes of Oklahoma: View a memorial to the Oklahomans who have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

CASHION — On July 4, Marine Lance Cpl. Jonathan Stroud penned a letter to fellow 2007 Cashion High School graduate Sam Boyd, the best man in his wedding last November.

Stroud, 20, was killed Thursday while serving in Afghanistan. On Friday, Boyd unfolded the letter and read it aloud:

"Hey guys I hope all is well. I should be back here pretty soon in about four and a half months.

"It's really hot here, we moved from the desert down to the river and now it's super hot and humid.

This is so sad and useless. I believe in fighting for our freedom... but is this war we're fighting really for OUR freedom?

My prayers and condolences to the family. Thank you, Marine Stroud for fulfilling your duty.

Thank you BettyRubble, I did not like the choice of words either. I do not think it was intentional however. May the young MARINE rest in peace.

This makes me so sad. He does look so young and so ornery. What a loss to our country and his family and friends. May you find comfort in your sorrow knowing his service and sacrifice was much appreciated.

Cashion? I've never heard of the town. Oklahoma is like Kansas, so many little towns and fork in the roads, it makes me wonder how those towns continue to exist year after year.

My heart felt condolences to the family and friends.
Your son, and husband, elected to be a Marine and I am grateful for his short time on earth. He was obviously a very brave man, and he is now in heaven.
God bless you and be with you in your sorrow.

I am sorry we have lost another young man because of war. My condolences to the family.
...
I remember something I heard a long time ago in regards to war:
Rule:
#1....Young men die.
#2....You can't change Rule #1.
I pray our young men and women will return home soon.

It's time for our brave men and women to come home. I know in my case I have a son that has never met his father because he's over there and of course I miss my husband!! :(
