Crash victims were all friends
By GAVIN OFF World Staff Writer
Published:
9/7/2009 2:25 AM
Last Modified: 9/7/2009 3:40 AM
Family members said the three people killed and the survivor of a pickup crash Saturday morning at a Tulsa rock quarry were good friends, most of whom had known each other for a while.
The crash killed Troy Adams, 24; Mark Gaches, who turned 23 last week; and Andrea Merriman, 21. Amanda Stone, 19, survived. All were from the Cleveland, Okla., area.
Gaches' mother, Lori Gaches, said her son was dating Stone. He was supposed to work security at Oklahoma State University's football game Saturday, she said.
Although authorities said alcohol likely played a role in the crash, Lori Gaches said her son quit drinking while he trained as a mixed martial arts fighter.
He had been training for three years and had a 3-0 record, she said.
Gaches' father, Steve Gaches, said his son's most recent victory was just months ago.
The Gaches said they didn't know where their son was heading Saturday morning. Neither did Adams' family members.
Adams' aunt Kathy Bluejacket drove from Little Rock, Ark., after she heard about the crash.
She said the four were in Adams' pickup and were trying to get on Interstate 244 when the driver made a wrong turn.
Authorities aren't sure who was driving the pickup.
"It was out in the country, and there weren't any street lights," Bluejacket said.
Adams played several sports in high school, including football, baseball and wrestling, she said.
"He liked anything outdoors," she said. "He
liked to fish, he liked to camp, he liked to ride four-wheelers."
Funeral services
Visitation for Mark Gaches and Troy Adams will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland, Okla. Services for Adams will be 10:30 a.m. and services for Gaches will be at 2 p.m., both Wednesday at Western Heights Baptist Church in Cleveland.
Visitation for Andrea Merriman will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chapman- Black Funeral Home, and services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Western Heights Baptist Church.

I wonder how Mr. Adams' aunt knows that they were attempting to find I-244 and made a wrong turn?

Police reports, Amanda Stone, she did seem to have an idea where they were, so it's reasonable to assume she knew where they wanted to be. The way home is on 244.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the victim's families, as well as Amanda. Loosing a child, is the most tragic loss of any parent, I know, for I lost my son, only one year ago. The pain and sorrow, is just too much to endure. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Personnally, as someone who lives near the quarrys, thank God they didn't kill anyone else. I have driven by the quarrys on occassion and this cannot be classified as an accident; but, a series of very bad decisions. There is a difference. They definitely were going freakin fast! The last time I looked there is a gate at the entrance to these quarries. I read in one article that the locked gate had been busted through. I think that this needs to be said because we need to teach our children that sometimes there are accidents that are beyond our control and sometimes people can make bad decisions that can end their lives. I speak from some experience, I lost my cousin through a series of stupid decisions that also killed her friend. As for family members that might be reading these comments, I had to finally realize that it was not helpful to me to keep watching the police video of my cousin's crash. A good place for compassion will be with your church, family, or friends. Even better, make their lives mean something more by trying to prevent others from dying from their own bad decisions.

"Crash victims were all friends". Perhaps this is a good time to start the "Friends don't let friends drink and drive" campaign. This is a horrible thing for anyone to have to go through. So people WAKE UP !!! How many people spend time at bars and then drive??? Gee, there seems to be a bar or LQ on every block so I would say plenty. You want to drink, do it at home. If they are your friend, STOP THEM. They may get mad at you for the moment but they will be alive. LEARN FROM THIS.

I would like to have something clarified - the news reports say that Amanda survived, but I haven't seen or heard if she was actually in the truck when it went over or if she was ejected before it fell? If she got her cell phone out of the wreckage to call for help, she had to have gone all the way to the bottom. If that is so, what is mind boggling to me (& I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned by anyome else) is that it would seem there would be no way in the world for anyone to survive any kind of a fall of that height!! If Amanda did indeed fall 170 feet, she must have had angels protecting her. I would like to hear more in the news about her miraculous survival.
People make dumb choices & do stupid things all the time, there isn't one of us alive who hasn't done something stupid in our lives at one time or another. Sober or drinking, they made some bad choices, that doesn't make them bad people. Thankfully no innocent bystanders were injured or killed, it's just too bad the other 3 didn't survive too.
My heart goes out to the families & friends of the 3 who died, I can't imagine the pain you must have & I hope you can find peace. My heart also goes out to Amanda & her family because being a survivor of something like this isn't always easy either when you are involved in something that caused the death of other people.
Life lessons can be hard & I hope Amanda can find peace herself & will take the 2nd chance at life she's been given & make something good of it and learn from this tragic experience.
And I say that because when I was in highschool, we had a boy who's daddy bought him a brand new black Trans Am(Smokey & the Bandit had just come out),he took it out on a narrow winding road at a VERY high rate of speed, lost control, hit a vehicle head on & killed the driver(a husband & father of 3 small kids). We all felt so sorry for what this boy must be going through mentally & the whole school supported him when he came back. But the jeark obviously didn't learn a thing because just 3 months later, with a cast still on his
leg, he totalled the new pickup his daddy replaced the car with, doing the same stupid thing. Thank God he didn't kill anyone else that time!

I love how I have made two comments stating that these people were being extremely reckless and thankfully didn't call anyone else, and I keep getting reported and my comments yanked. Someone doesn't want the truth about the situation to be talked about in the message boards. They blew threw a stop sign, crashed through a gate (look at Google streetview if you don't believe me - it's there) - traveled probably another 100 or 200 feet at such a high rate of speed that they went OVER the barricade of boulders meant to prevent vehicles from going into this pit, flew 200 feet through the air before hitting more barricade boulders on another side of the pit. Once again, thank god they didn't kill someone else. Imagine if there had been another car traveling east or west on 46th St N? Or someone walking along the side of the rode, or on a bicycle? My comments are NOT defamation or inflammatory. Someone, probably from the family, just doesn't want to admit that these people screwed up. Yes, it is tragic. No, not all young people this age act this way - I was taught by my parents to respect the laws. These young people made a mistake. For many of these people to act like these people were saints and angels and good people, that may be true. But at the time of the accident, they were doing things that could have resulted in the loss of life of someone not in the vehicle with them. I have first hand seen the effects of a crash at where one vehicle was stopped and got slammed into at 50 miles per hour. There was a 6 month old child in a safety seat in the back seat. The trunk and back seat did not exist anymore, the only thing you could see of the child was her head partially visible in the tangled metal. So, I say again, thank god no one else was hurt or killed besides those you made the decision to do this. 129th E Ave is used a lot by people street racing and the likes - anyone know if this might have been the case?

RGM, if you feel so strongly in making your point on a story that obviously is about the young men and not the accident, then man up and submit your story to the TW and put your name on it. Instead of hiding like a coward with no profile.

Its been said many times at least over and over in this house, Speed and Alcohol Kills. Yes the surviving girl did have an angle watching over her, hopefully she1ll use this oppertunity to spread the wor while still really banged uo, to tell these young people who feel invincible behind the wheel. Over and over sice I`ve been a child, these same tragidies have needlessly happen, In my own family both my young siblings have distroyed their vehicles because of of speed and alcohol, luckily they make it out okay, The times I`ve spenr praying, and crying is mute now. My deepest condoances to the hard broken families, its said time heals all, but burying your son or daughter is something that I`m not so sure times does heal, no matter what, your lives are changed forever, God Blees you all.

RGM...I read your latest post and it comes across as someone who has a lot of resolved anger. This is not good for you and your health...I know Mark's family and I don't believe anyone is trying to turn anyone into a saint...I would think you should know that when someone we love dies God gives us comfort in the good memories and not what their faults might have been.
If TW pulled your other posts then I am glad few got to read them.
I keep hearing that we all need to wake up and you are so right.
It takes a community to raise a child..and it takes God in all our lives to become a true community.
So I guess I will see all of you in church on Sunday morning as that is where we all need to begin our mission for a perfect world...one devoid of stupidity and stupid mistakes; judgement; Oh heck we can talk about it at Church Sunday...see you then.

To the families and friends,
I extend my sincerest condolences. I'm very sorry for your loss and yes, they are with the LORD. Just remember, sometimes GOD takes our most precious gems so HE can keep them safe and where they'll never be lost and one sweet day, we will reunite with our loved ones that were taken too soon. I pray for comfort for all of you during this difficult time. GOD bless.
I commend TPD, EMSA and the TFD. We all take them for granted, but think of how this city would be if we didn't have them. I worked as a previous dispatcher and I can tell you it's very nerve wrecking trying to locate a victim when they don't know their location and time is of the essence. GOD bless them all too. We need them!
RGM, Maybe what you said is true and maybe it isn't, none of us were there. Maybe speed played into it and loss of control, but you need to be a little more compassionate and considerate of the friends and family. That is NOT the kind of news any parents, relatives or friends want to hear and right now they are dealing with the shock and the pain, not to mention the weight of their grief. They can't bring their loved ones back and their lives will NEVER be the same. I'm a complete stranger to these folks and yet I feel heart broke for the parents, siblings, relatives and the people that had to investigate the situation as I'm certain many of these other posters do. Be a little more mindful.
I realize you RGM might have been trying to send a message to be careful, but I think you could have used a more sensitive way to convey the message. Three young people lost their lives. It's tragic when we read and hear stories such as this. Again, GOD bless all and drive safely.
As they say, "don't drive faster than your angels can fly". Rest in peace Troy, Mark and Andrea.
