OILTON — A Creek County sheriff’s deputy was shot Tuesday night by a man who had been threatening to kill himself, Sheriff Steve Toliver said.

Sgt. Dusty Thomas was shot in the shoulder by a shotgun blast in Oilton and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa for treatment, the sheriff said. The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear, but Toliver said they were not life-threatening and that Thomas had been wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Thomas, a member of the Creek County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Team, was assisting Oilton police in responding to a call about a suicidal man who was armed with a shotgun, Toliver said.

The man, whose name was not released Tuesday night, was sitting in a truck, revving its engine and threatening to kill himself before he shot the deputy, the sheriff said.

Before he was shot, Thomas had called the sheriff to ask whether the SOT could be mobilized, and that process had been started, Toliver said.

After he was shot, Thomas tackled the man and held him until other officers could help. The man was then taken into custody by Deputy Bobby Raines, the sheriff said.

Oilton is in far western Creek County, about 40 miles west of Tulsa.

Sounds more like a homocidal person than a suicidal person to me.

ALM: Oilton does have a police department. However, the incident actually happened outside of the city limits. That is probably why county was called. I guess the news sources weren't clear on this. Also, since neither of us were there, we can't say that the OPD wasn't there.
