A high-speed crash killed a man Monday afternoon when his vehicle veered off a busy highway and slammed into a tree.

The impact split the Jeep Cherokee in half, and Deven Duke, 23, of Broken Arrow died at the scene on the Creek Turnpike near the Memorial Drive exit.

Trooper Kenny Knight said Duke was driving the sport utility vehicle east about 4:15 p.m. when his SUV drifted onto a grassy embankment. The Jeep traveled several hundred feet before hitting a tree.

The vehicle then slid sideways into a second tree, causing the SUV to break apart.

There were no signs that Duke tried to slow down, Knight said.

Although it wasn’t clear how fast the Jeep was traveling, Knight said it takes extreme force to split a vehicle in two.

Duke was wearing a seat belt, and his airbags activated, Knight said.

He had no passengers, and no other cars were involved.

Troopers were investigating whether a medical condition might have played a part in the crash, Knight said. There were no signs that alcohol was involved.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office will perform tests to narrow down what may have caused the accident, Knight said.
