The Tulsa Zoo welcomed the first of two new female giraffes this week.
The 9-year-old female from the Santa Barbara Zoo in California arrived Wednesday afternoon.
Angela Evans, community relations manager at the zoo, said the transport and unloading went smoothly.
"She came right out, and we coaxed her into the barn," Evans said.
Samburu or Sam, a 17-year-old male, has been the only giraffe at the Tulsa Zoo for a year.
"Sam was interested the whole time," Evans said.
The female has access to a smaller yard near the barn and can be seen by the public.
The second female giraffe is expected to arrive next week from Cumberland, Ohio.
The two females will be separated from Sam at first to avoid the possibility of winter calves, Evans said.
The zoo is still raising about $50,000 to pay for the transport of the two new giraffes. Zoo patrons can buy coupon books for $1 that contain $20 worth of free merchandise from Burger King, Taco Bueno and the zoo.
The books can be purchased at the zoo or area locations of the two restaurants.
Patrons also can help name the two new giraffes by donating toward their favorite name. Votes can be cast at the zoo and at Build A Bear and Banana Republic locations.
The names that raise the most money will win and be announced Nov. 1.
