The plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion spoke Saturday in Tulsa.

Norma McCorvey, better known as Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, is a small woman, with short-cropped red hair barely showing under a baseball cap, and a cigarette often dangling between her fingers.

She told her story Saturday morning at a pro-life rally at the Garden of Hope, a park owned by the Catholic Diocese of Tulsa across the street from Tulsa's only abortion clinic, Reproductive Services, 6136 E. 32nd Place.

The rally marked the midpoint of "40 Days for Life," an initiative with round-the-clock prayer being held at 140 sites across the nation.

In an interview with the Tulsa World before she spoke publicly, McCorvey said that in the summer of 1969, unmarried and pregnant with her third child, she was approached by attorneys asking her to be the plaintiff in a case to challenge Texas laws banning abortion.

"I didn't even know what a plaintiff was," she said. "I was just a hippie."

In discussions over two pitchers of beer, she and the attorneys chose the pseudonym Jane Roe, because Jane was her childhood imaginary friend.

She downplayed her part in the historic case.

"All I did was sign an affidavit," she said. Four years later, in 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion across the land.

"I've never even had an abortion," said the 62-year-old mother of three daughters and several grandchildren.

After abortion was legalized, McCorvey worked for years at an abortion clinic in Dallas, and marched in pro-choice rallies.

Working late one night in 1995, she said, she had an experience that changed her from an abortion provider to a pro-life advocate.

"I heard a scream in the back of the clinic and went back there," she said.

"A woman who was having a procedure had coughed, simply coughed, and her children came out. She had twins. That was my realization that these were children.

"I left that night and got drunk because it was such a horrible awakening."

McCorvey said she developed a friendship with pro-life people protesting outside the clinic and eventually was baptized as a Christian.

"Jane Roe died in 1995, in order for me to live," she said.

Since then, she has converted to Catholicism and become active in the pro-life movement. She worked for five years with a group that collected stories of women who have had abortions, and presented them to the Supreme Court.

She wrote a book, "Won by Love," and is launching a ministry by that name this fall that will enlist mothers to pray and fast for an end to abortion.

She has received threats as recently as two weeks ago and travels with a bodyguard. She lives "on a mountain" in a location few people know and has watchdogs and people around her all the time.

Several Tulsa police officers watched over the rally. The Reproductive Services clinic was not open Saturday morning, and no counterprotesters were present.

McCorvey said she was optimistic about the progress of the pro-life movement.

"We're seeing a lot of new (pro life) groups, and a lot of young people coming out," she said. "We're winning."

17 years ago I talked my then wife out of having an abortion. We already had 2 girls and I have raised my girls and son alone ever since she had him I don't regret it one minute. I just couldn't live with myself knowing I did nothing to try and stop it at the time. I hope all who consider this option think long and hard about it. It can make a big differnce in your life.

Raising a child, at least for me, is the most rewarding experience I've ever had in my life.

Go ahead and take away the rights of women to abortions. Afterall, the right sees them as nothing more then second class citizens anyway. If you are "NOT" religious, having an abortion has nothing too do with God nor man, but of yourself. The way it should be thought of. It's nobodys business but yours.

Skinny,

Where did Companion say anything about health care? He's bringing up an important point in this subject, that abortion is no one's business except for the person who is getting one. But of course, shoving your nose into other people's business(like the government) is nothing new.

Don't want an abortion? Don't have one.

I understand that there is legislation pending in Oklahoma to FORCE doctors and women to submit to having their PERSONAL INFORMATION published on a website, much like a sex offender.

Women would be forced to publish the answers to 37 questions: occupation, income, how they are paying for the procedure, whether they are employed by the state, etc.

Of course the legislation is promoted by the same people who OPPOSE GOVERNMENT internvention in HEALTH CARE.

WhoseLeft....heard the same thing on the Rachel Maddow show. What the right would do to stop something "they feel" is immoral and too do with religion. An unreligious women having an abortion, has no thoughts about religion when the decision is made. The right has a hard time understanding that there are people in america[16%] that are atheists or agnostic. And Pizzagirl, accidents do happen when having sex. Neither intented on a pregnancy happening. I'm a liberal as can be, but I hate abortions. Women do have their rights to their body.

No sir. I'm against abortion just as much as you. Let me tell you a story I shouldn't but I will. I have been blessed with one child. A boy I've raised since nine months. His mother was $50.00 short of an abortion. She came to me, I refused to give her the money. It cost me $8000.00 in attorney fees and court costs to stop her from killing what has turned out to be my only child. And like I said in an earlier post to this article, it has been the most rewarding experience in my life.

I'm just tired of the hate that's taking place in this abortion debate. I found the post by Pizza Girl to be such a simple solution to this never ending argument that's filled with so much hate and has led to bombings and the murders of doctors. But I guess I'm naive, solutions to tough questions are never easy. But no, I'm absolutely against the killing of the unborn.

I hope not. BUt it's not a reason to kill reform either. A latter Congress can always come back an undo this if it comes to pass.

"Don't want an abortion? Don't have one."

If we observe a social injustice, such as an innocent being snuffed out and remain silent, we are complicit in the act. If we all approached issues with your suggested attitude of, "It's the perpetrator's private business," the world would be a much worse place to live.

Abortion is not a personal problem, it's something that effects our entire culture, both through the millions of fellow citizens who're missing from our lives and the way it devalues life.

The majority of aborted children are killed, because they are seen as an inconvenience to their parents. Can terminated a developing infant, in any circumstance, ever be a pure and good course of action?

I am a proponent for choice. That said, I don't think anyone should choose to terminate a pregnancy after the first trimester or once the fetus becomes viable outside of the womb.

I just wish the anti-abortionists would be as fervent for womens right to easy, cheap or FREE access to birth control, even for young girls. (yes, some will have sex at a young age, or be forced by fathers, step-fathers, mom's boyfriend, uncles, and etc.) How many stories have we read on here where some creepy foster parent or step-father or father has impregnated a young girl? MULTIPLE TIMES! How many?

The same people who come on here outraged over abortion are not nearly as outraged at that circumstance. WHY NOT?

I wish the anti-abortionists would be as diligent in seeing that women who want a tubal ligation can get one. For FREE. Yes, FREE. FREE, FREE, FREE.

My nephew and his girlfriend had one child. She wanted to get a tubal, but the doctor refused since she was still young. (in her mid-twenties). Now she has a second baby. STILL, the doctor has refused to do the tubal ligation. They have little money, little choice, and no insurance.

What men seem to not get is that some women get pregnant easily. Very easily. Even with birth control. Others can't get pregnant to save her life.

Do the above things, and I would take the anti-abortionists more seriously. But, it will never happen because, MEN DON'T GET PREGNANT.

I've had one child, and I'll tell you that there is no freaking way I could give a child up for adoption. No way.

If men got pregnant all this abortion or no abortion would be a non-issue. It's ironic that the majority of the staunch anti-abortionists are men. They have not an earthly idea of what its like to be pregnant. Add being poor, and single to that soup mix. They never will. You may think you do, but you don't. THEN, they dare to complain about them getting hand outs from the government.

>> Right. Lets get those young girls on free birth control. That way they can be raped by their fathers, step-fathers, mom's boyfrineds, uncles, etc. and no one will ever know. What a relief it will be for the creepy males.

Great idea there, Ayo.

Not putting yourself in a situation that will cause pregnancy is cheap and disease free. If you don't want to pay child support, keep it zipped up. So many ways to not fight over abortion. Sex isn't all it's cracked up to be and is not worth all the problems that come with having an unwanted child.

However, if the mother or child's life is at stake, I see no other option.

TK1, I'm going to make that suggestion to him. Still, if a woman wants a tubal I think she should be able to get one. Especially, if she has already had a child. I put that example up just to show the insanity out there.

I'll tell you this. I can't wait to see those two babies. They're up in Oregon. The second one is not even a month old, but the first one is the cutest little boy I have ever seen. Ever. I use to watch this particular nephew quite a bit when he was little, and he was a very cute little guy, but I think his son beat him out. :)

Legal Citizen, these girls need protection from these type of men. They need to be removed from the home and protected. How often does that happen? It seems like it usually only gets attention after they've been impregnated. Plus, many of the girls who become sexually active at a young age have been sexually abused. It's messed up. Even if they get removed from the abusive house they almost always remain sexually active due to the psychological damage. This is no scientific study here. Just some observations from various situations I've witnessed throughout my life. It's a messed up situation. Every time I read one of those stories I say my thanks for having been fortunate enough to grow up in a loving home with mom and dad who protected me, and put me before anyone or anything else. I guess I just have a hard time imagining how any little girl could endure such a situation.

Of course I don't want those young girls to be on BC and not removed from an abusive home.

I'm off topic, but it's not a simple cut and dry issue.

Legal Citizen doesn't have a clue does he Ayo? I remember a women author of a book I can't remember the title that was on Book TV. Her book was about abortions back a few decades ago when women were given themselves abortions and not only the fetus died, but the woman as well. Wish I could remember the author and title. It was at least two years ago when she was on Book TV. But as she was talking about her book, I had a sense that Roe-v-Wade saved a lot of women's lives and gave more understanding from relatives of the predicament of unwanted pregnancy within a normal family and the desperation of the pregnant teenager.

Eventually, abortion will be criminalized, because terminating a life cannot be viewed as someone's private business. The ruling in Roe v. Wade was a joke, and contradicts any sensible legal precedent. No other crime has found protected status on the same grounds, because it is ludicrous.

Now we've dumbed down a few generations to view this as a matter of choice, privacy, or control over one's own life. Those views are severely warped. It's time to shed noon-day light on what we've been doing and repent and change our direction.

So does not a woman just as a man not have control over her body? I'm staunchly against abortion. See earlier post in this thread, but I have no right to tell a woman what she can do with her body. That's between her and her conscience.
