SHAWNEE — Cara Baxter cradles four small dogs in her lap, allowing them to nuzzle their muddy faces against her clean shirt without a care.

"We're going to get you all good homes soon," Baxter promises. "You'll never have to live like that again."

Baxter and her husband, Alan Baxter, rescued more than 90 dogs from a breeder in Bethel Acres on Monday.

She said it didn't take them long to realize that the endeavor was larger than their Tecumseh garage and pocketbooks could handle, so they asked for help.

This is wonderful that they got the dogs out of these conditions but why was the negligent breeder allowed off the hook?

The article also does not say anything about the dogs being Vet checked. They could harbor diseases people are unaware of and they should be spayed or neutered as a condition of adoption with follow up.

I agree, Centrist. Whatever you do, don't continue the cycle of pain and irresponsibility.
I rescued a Bsoton Terrier breeder mom last year and she has been a joy. She is still not completely dependable at home alone, so she is in her "little house."
She is loving and fun to live with, trusting and gentle.I wouldn't trade her for any other dog.

The negligent breeder is free now to obtain new breeder dogs and start again, if they choose too. I have to wonder if the Tri-County Humane Society is aware of the fact that the Oklahoma Dog and Cat Sterilization Act requires that an agency releasing dogs/cats for adoption is required to collect a $10 refundable deposit and have the owners sign a contract to have an adopted animal sterilized? That law was passed in 1981. Another article I read on this subject says that the Baxters are going to follow up with adopters to assure that the dogs are spayed or neutered. Are they in for a surprise! I speak from experience from having made humane society spay/neuter follow up calls where the cost of the spay/neuter surgery was included in the adoption fee. Too many adopters either cannot be located or will state that they no longer have the animal. I have heard this same complaint over the years from others who have made spay/neuter follow up calls, when the vet fee for sterilization was already paid.
