GOWEN — Less than 24 hours after Latimer County Sheriff Israel Beauchamp scaled back a search for a missing family, his office got a call that a deer hunter had been shot to death about 25 miles west of where the missing family's pickup was found.

John A. Morgan, 44, was shot and killed by Jack Zearley, 69, while they were hunting about 6 p.m. Saturday in the Gowen Mountain area, Beauchamp said.

"I would hope that this shows how dangerous it can be out there," he said.

“We haven’t called off the search. The search is still going on. But we don’t have mass individuals out there walking around in the woods aimlessly anymore. We can’t afford to have anybody else shot.”

That gun had better be a muzzleloader.

no, that's why you practice proper hunting and gun safety. that's one reason i don't hunt a lot anymore. way too many hunters out in the woods who shoot at anything that moves without knowing what they're shooting at. now, i'm all for people hunting. i enjoy hunting myself. but if you hunt, MAKE SURE you know what you're shooting BEFORE busting off that round. because once that bullet's on it's way, you can't take it back. this is a terrible thing to happen. my heart goes out to his family and friends.

At this time of the year, 6 p.m. is too late to be hunting, it starts getting dusky dark at that time, which affects a person's vision.

Just for the record, the accidental shooting wasn't Dick Cheneys fault.
The gentlemen who got sprayed with buckshot was in a location he shouldn't have been. He came over a rise just as the quail flushed and was in front of the group instead of at the side where he should have been. Get the facts before making snide
remarks!

Surely, jess you don't expect the Bush haters to use actual facts, do you? They didn't use them the whole 8 years that Bush was in office, why should they start now? :)

It reallly doesn't matter who was at fault, Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face, and that's just plain funny. And what's even funnier is people trying to defend Bush and Cheney. That always cracks me up!

Anyone considered maybe the man was hunting on someone else's land without permission? Not alot of info in the article.

Rumors are that the OSBI has taken a 260 buck into custody, and that buck is being questioned intensely by OSBI investigaters.
The un-named buck has refused a polygraph test and is asking for legal council from former television star Bullwinkle.
Sources have disclosed that the buck has gunpowder burn residue on the front hooves, but has refused to answer questions or provide an alibi.

mar- the hunting regulations say that you can hunt for 30min before official sunrise and 30min after official sunset. people should be more careful and I for one will be wearing blazing orange.

I quit deer hunting after hearing a couple of old farts make a comment about "getting a couple of sound shots" one morning on the way to a deer hunting weekend.

I finshed my coffee and went back home - haven't been out since.

H_Harl says "I'm all for people hunting"

Well I agree, just let them child molesters go and give me a shotgun with a 3 1/2" magnum slug and make it pedophile season.

My sympathy to the family! I'm shocked at the heartless comments. It's sad that you can find humor in such a tragic loss!

In case you're not up on current events, one can be colorblind and have no problem getting a hunting license.

Blaze Orange only helps if the shooter sees in color and not shades of grey.

Mar Bush didn't use facts to involve the USA in the war with Iraq. So while Nero fiddled Iran and N Korea were free to plan violations of nuclear proliferation.

How close is Gowen to Red Oak in Latimer county. Isn't that where the family is missing? Just a thought.
This year we have had poachers on our property and my boys are almost afraid to hunt on our own land. They have found one deer carcus with just the antlers cut off. Its pretty sad when you and your family are following rules and regulations and others make you afraid to go outside.
My prayers to this hunters family and also to the missing family in Latimer county.

I wouldn't think of hunting. Too many irresponsible people running around. To prove my point, just scroll to see all the irresponsible people making jokes after a man died. There is a place and time people

condolences to the family.

dustyoutlaw...i know numerous people who hunt. i don't know any of them who hunt while they're drunk or drinking. i, personally, have never drank or been drunk while hunting. you shouldn't exagerate or make up so much "information".
