Flu shots go quickly
Swine flu claims six more in latest report
Hundreds of people wait in the rain Thursday to get swine flu vaccinations at Tulsa Community College's Northeast Campus. The Health Department hosted the clinic for those most at risk of complications from the H1N1 flu, including children. SHERRY BROWN/Tulsa World

Get more information on the swine flu, including prevention tips and frequently asked questions.
Six Oklahomans died from swine flu last week, bringing the official tally of reported deaths from the novel H1N1 virus to 17, health officials said.
An Oklahoma City girl who died Monday and a Kay County man who died before a new reporting system was in place were not counted in this week's numbers.
Of the latest deaths, four were in Oklahoma County, one was in Carter County and another was in Canadian County.
Four of those who died were adults and two were younger than 19, said state Health Department spokesman Larry Weatherford.
Four of the six who died had underlying medical conditions that put them at greater risk for complications or death from the H1N1 virus, he said. But the two who were younger than 19 did not, he said.
"I think it's really important not to create the impression that a preexisting condition is required for the H1N1 influenza to be dangerous," Weatherford said.
The danger to children — who are one of the groups most at risk for complications of H1N1 — was one of the reasons so many parents brought their children to Thursday's vaccine clinic at Tulsa Community College's Northeast campus, 3737 E. Apache St.
Hundreds of people — including many young children — began lining up as early as 8 a.m. for the clinic, which didn't start until 3 p.m.
"We are trying to come up with as many ways to get people in the room as we can," said Melanie Christian, spokeswoman for the Tulsa City-County Health Department.
In all, 2,289 shots were given, and the clinic didn't close until about 8:30 p.m.
Health Department officials say the vaccine is the best way to protect against H1N1 flu, and "we do feel this vaccine is safe to receive," Christian said.
Officials expect about 15,000 more doses next week, when they hope to offer the vaccine to adults with underlying chronic conditions, she said.
For the week ending Saturday, Oklahoma hospitalizations associated with the virus did fall slightly, said Weatherford, of the state Health Department. Still, 175 people were hospitalized.
Of the 19 people who have died from the virus, six were younger than 19. And two of the children had underlying medical conditions that may have increased their risk of illness, according to the department's weekly report.
One child was younger than 6 months.
At least 10 of those people who have died in the state had documented underlying conditions such as asthma, diabetes, obesity or an immune-compromising condition.
Supplies of the H1N1 vaccine have been limited nationwide, particularly amid recent production problems among vaccine manufacturers. But Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he expects the vaccine will be widely available among most states in about two weeks.

"We wish we had more vaccine available now. We wish it had been available weeks or even months earlier, but we're beginning to get to a significant increase in the availability," he said.
Seasonal flu vaccine also is in short supply in the Tulsa area as manufacturers struggle to produce both the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine.

It seems they are trying to keep these sad deaths a secret for a while, I guess don't want to panic people?
I'm sure glad to see how quickly the federal government and state government is getting the vaccine out to everyone. (I'm being sarcastic). The rate they are going they will still be giving out the vaccine next spring or summer. Too little, too late.
Is this an indication how well the federal government will run the health care? If so, we are in for a rough existence.

Mar I agree. They are keeping the figures silent for a while. They are also not counting the ones that do not die.
They saw this coming. Why did they not start production of the vaccine earlier so they could have gotten the vaccine to everyone earlier. Now they are behind and can't keep up and more and more people are dying.
Maybe they should have heeded the warnings months ago, pulled their heads out of their butts and said AHA! I got it. Why don't we make mass quantities and ship it early? These are supposed to be smart people.

The sad part, is that the reason the prisoners are getting it first is probably because they can file a law suit against the state if they get sick from it.....go figure....

The vaccine issue isn't due to lack of effort.
We only have one manufacturer in this country.
Most of the vaccine is produced in other countries.
Since nearly every nation that can afford it, has ordered vaccine, the manufacturers are trying to keep all of their customers happy.
The egg based method of producing vaccine takes time.
As to why they didn't start making it sooner - they had to wait until they had a strain to work with.
I don't understand all of the science involved, but I imagine they wait until they have a specimen that they feel is a good candidate for vaccine.
If the virus were to change a lot, the vaccine would not be as effective.
Normally, when a manufacturer has several countries waiting for vaccine, the host country will be served first. We are the host country for only one manufacturer.
There are down sides to outsourcing and off-shoring everything.

I was angry when I read that the terrorist suspects will be vaccinated, but after giving it some thought - there aren't that many of them.
It's not as though vaccinating them will deprive a state of vaccine.
Our kids, pregnant women and people with underlying health problems, heathcare workers and first responders need vaccine first.
What puzzles me is why didn't we make an effort to have more production here in the US back when everyone was afraid that H5N1 would bring the next pandemic?
Our experts should have known that being second or third in line would create delays.

I am not in a hurry to take it anyway.............they say its safe, but do we really know? My sister is pregnant, and kinda scared to take it. What if in 5 years all these babies of the pregnant women that got the vaccine have some sort of defect caused by the vaccine? Not saying it will happen, but just nervous!

Why even bother with the photo, it is so dark, nothing can be seen.
What do you bet that the majority of the people there were not children, pregnant women, people with underlying health problems or health care workers. When the word "free" is used, some people will show up for anything.

Lynette, you must have had a bad day, hopefully tomorrow will be better for you.
The photo they had up when I was reading the article was very, very dark, impossible to see any people. They have changed the photo, which is much better. My remark was due to how so many "entitled" people act now days.
My grandchildren would disagree with you Lynette, as they know how soft hearted their grammy is.
As for psychedelikrelik, what can I say, your name says it all.

From the article:
"I think it's really important not to create the impression that a preexisting condition is required for the H1N1 influenza to be dangerous," Weatherford said.
= = =
Thank you for that.
It seems the protocol has been set since the beginning to stress any and all "underlying conditions" whenever possible.
The media in some countries has no choice, but we expect better from the media in the US.
Yes, many of the victims may have been slightly overweight and may have had allergies or mild asthma.
So what? Conditions like that are VERY common and none of us would expect to die from flu because we're 20 pounds overweight, use an inhaler now and then or take medicine for seasonal allergies.
The majoriy of victims did not have serious underlying conditions that had them at deaths door when the contracted H1N1.
Please Stop the nonsense of qualifying all deaths with the "underlying conditions" mantra.
Victims of seasonal flu are generally the weak and frail, most of them elderly or people whose health WAS seriously compromised before contracting the virus. Many expire because they develop secondary bacterial problems.
I'm disappointed that the msm continues with the mantra to somehow leave the impression that the growing number of victims were doomed due to their "underlying conditions".
We expect better from our journalists and our healthcare agencies.
I don't expect someone to die from flu because they have mild asthma, allergies, diabetes controlled by medicine or are a few pounds overweight.
The global effort to somehow imply the victims were doomed by their conditions is becoming nauseating and transparent to most of us.
Don't believe me? Just sample news articles from last spring til now. I'm not picking on our local media, the practice has been pretty much global. There are only a few countries who haven't followed this protocol.

I was there with my grandson who turned 6 months old that very day. I didn't hesitate at all in getting him the H1N1 vaccine, I also took it because he is not fully protected untill he takes the second shot after 28 days. Most of the people in line had children and were only getting their children vaccinated. Don't just assume everyone there were getting the shot.I was afraid not to get the shot because of my grandson. If I had gotten it and gave it to him I would never be able to forgive myself.

Only a tiny % of people get the flu each year. There are other more important steps to take. In addition to hand washing, and all the stuff mommy told us, we should verbally abuse those idiots who come to work sick and try to impress by boss by "working through" it. Go home fool.
