Mayor's home protest site
Several protesters say they are friends of laid-off officers.

Protesters carrying signs supporting the Tulsa Police Department stood outside Mayor Kathy Taylor's house Friday to demonstrate their anger over the layoffs of 21 officers.
At mid-afternoon, about six people were outside the house, which is near 28th Street and Columbia Place.
"We are not doing any harm to anyone. We are just bringing the message to her home because that is where it affects us the most — at our homes," said one of the protesters, Kelsey Morris.
Several of the protesters said they are friends of the officers who were laid off.
"It does not matter if you know them or not; they are officers who served the city of Tulsa. It is a big hit on everybody, whether they realize it or not, when the city loses cops," said Ryan Kifer.
The Fraternal Order of Police issued a statement recognizing the outpouring of support generated
by the recent layoff of 21 police officers but suggesting that any protest occur at a public site, not at a site near someone's private property in a residential neighborhood.
But the protesters said they believe that protesting at Taylor's residence was the best way to bring attention to what they believe is an injustice.
"We are pretty upset about them laying off the 21 Tulsa police officers," Kifer said. "We came out here to try and send a message to the community and people that don't really understand why they were laid off or who might not have been fully educated on the matter.
"Hopefully, we can change the minds of the citizens and maybe take a couple of donations for those officers who lost their jobs."
The protesters were taking donations for a fund that has been set up for the officers who were laid off Tuesday. Taylor has said the layoffs and other measures were necessary to cut the department's budget by $2 million.
Kifer said the protesters had no contact with anyone at the mayor's house but that he was hopeful that Taylor would come and talk to them about their concerns.

I believe that protesting at a personal residence is wrong. Her public office you have my support. So we punish her neighbors? There is a difference between everyones public and private life. Should I protest the worker who messed up my drive thru order at his home? How about that person at wal-mart who would not do a return for me. Where is her house? where does this end? These people loose all my support over being just stupid.

Things are tough all over....Sales tax revenue is not going to go up soon so be ready for the next hit.I wonder how many police we had watching the protesters..So get out there and protect and serve...crimestoppers solves as many cases as they do.

We agree. The need for protection has not decreased - nor is it expected to decrease.
Police are first priorty.
I, as most of you who post, have no knowledge of the City budget or how to allot expenses. Those who do should do their very best for officers.
If a cut must be made, it should be monitary (not their cars). Officers should have a firm guarantee that cuts will be reinstated in 2010 as scheduled retirement will reduce the force to an affordable number. Only other option would be a few months on unemployment compensation for these officers, with promise of return date.
Based on unusual spending discussed in other posts, it appears that sufficient funds could have been budgeted for this. It looks like some people just want to stop the car perks.

The property assessment wasn't voted on by the people. That assessment vote came from the city council. The property owners are appealling the councils decision.

Let TPD keep their jobs and abolish OHP! At least TPD does REAL work and solves REAL crimes. It doesn't take a genius to sit along the turnpike in speedtraps and pull over, harass, and belittle citizens all day but it DOES make the state a lot of money and it DOES make them feel like real men. I guess money talks.
We do not want or need OHP anymore. I speak for the majority. TPD arrests REAL criminals every day and does a good job of it. THIS is where we need our law enforcement focused, not along the turnpikes in speedtraps and in small outlying towns choking paramedics and beating people.
ABOLISH OHP!!! KEEP TPD STRONG!!!

Mayor Taylor,
OHP is nothing but a bunch of glorified meter maids with chips on their shoulders. When are you going to take a stand for Tulsa and realize this? Speak out! Your word carries more than any of ours. The money that we will all be spending in tax dollars to settle civil lawsuits filed against OHP for abuse of power and police misconduct could be saved and redistributed throughout the state for better uses. The money that we have been paying for over a year now to keep OHP trooper Jake Rowland on the payroll while he awaits trial after he kicked a handcuffed woman repeatedly in the chest and Daniel Martin after he assaulted citizens TWICE now could have been better spent. We could have spent that money on TPD officers who are actually working to help clean up OUR OWN city instead of paying OHP troopers to sit at home and decide where they will assault their next victim and get away with it.

Corvetteguy,
I realize that OHP is a state issue involving the governor but Governor Henry will not listen to citizens regarding this matter. The calls and emails are never acknowledged. We all know that Oklahoma operates on good-old-boy politics. I would think Mayor Taylor's word as someone who can actually have some kind of INFLUENCE in the political arena would carry more weight than any single citizen or even many if they are all being ignored.
Also, if you go to ipetitionsdawtcom and look for the petition calling for OHP trooper Daniel Martin to be fired, you will find just under 5,000 signatures. That is one of several online petitions of the sort.

Why dont they lay off some of these city workers I see around town who are sitting in their truck, with a newspaper and coffee, while one guy is actually working. I would also like to see some desk jobs eliminated. What about that story of the security people at the airport that were getting paid overtime and weren't even at work?

Golden Sluricane, you are correct. Only 3 will actually be laid off. The rest will be recalled when the city recieves the OK to use the stimulas money to recall the officers.

loudshirt, et al.,
All City employees affect the quality of life for all citizens of Tulsa, from water treatment and distribution to sewer maintenance and wastewater treatment, trash collection, meter readers, street repair, engineers, inspectors, and the clerical staff supporting them. All other departments have suffered budget cuts and job losses to the point where they have great difficulty performing basic services.
The TPD is important, but not all-important. If they have to suffer cuts that's unfortunate, but not calamitous. I regret any layoffs, and do think the mayor failed to listen to the warnings. But Tulsa is our town, all of us, and it is the responsibility of all citizens to help each other. Be informed, and vote, write letters, call your elected representatives, and participate in your government.
