GUTHRIE — Closing the State Capitol Publishing Museum because of a state budget shortfall has rallied community members to try to find a way to reopen its doors.

Oklahoma Historical Society officials announced last week that they are cutting nearly 30 jobs and requiring the remaining 145 employees at state museums and historical sites to take six furlough days.

The cuts hit the Guthrie museum hard, shutting its doors.

State officials have carved out $27,000 for operating expenses. But there is no money for anyone to run the museum, said Nathan Turner, Guthrie Museum Complex director.

It's sad to see any museum being closed.

It's such a small town, hopefully they are shut temporarily until the economy comes back up.

In jogging my memory, I can't think of any museum that has ever closed. They get bought out, but their collections always survive. But if one penny of stimulus dollars were used to help this museum, the trumpeting of state politics would be loud and resounding. So the jobs are lost. Maybe only temporarily, But what is certain a small community is losing a bit of it's history. a slice of it's heritage, it's place on the map.
