RSU slates college day for students Saturday

CLAREMORE — Rogers State University will host Destination RSU: College Day 2009 on Saturday to help high school juniors and seniors and their parents learn about college life at the school.

The event, which is free, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the Centennial Center during the special Centennial Homecoming at RSU.

Participants also will have the opportunity to learn more about admission procedures, availability of scholarships and other financial aid and the wide variety of student activities and services available at RSU.

After the event, participants and their parents can attend RSU men's and women's basketball games for free.

A free tailgate lunch also will be served to all students and their families, and all participants will be eligible for a drawing for four tuition-waiver scholarships.

State NAACP chapter convention planned

MUSKOGEE — The Oklahoma State Conference NAACP will hold its 77th annual convention Friday and Saturday in Muskogee.

"NAACP 100 Years of Bold Dreams — Big Victories!" is the theme for the event, to be held at the Indian Capital Technology Center.

A series of workshops covering voter empowerment, legal redress, and labor and industry
issues are scheduled Friday afternoon.

Larry H. Smith, president of the Muskogee Christian Minister Union and the pastor at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Muskogee, will be the keynote speaker at a community mass meeting and memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday at the Old Agency Baptist Church.

More workshops on health and education are set for Saturday, with guest speaker Aletha Bonello, the southeast regional field organizer for the NAACP.

Several Muskogee residents will be recognized for their service at the Freedom Awards Banquet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. The keynote speaker for the banquet will be Donnie Nero, president of Connors State College in Warner.
