OWASSO — Maj. Dan Rooney, a PGA professional and F-16 fighter pilot with the Oklahoma Air National Guard, will be the keynote speaker Sunday at the city's annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony.
The event will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Owasso Veterans Memorial, 10320 E. 116th St. North, directly east of Funtastic Park.
Rooney started Patriot Golf Day in 2007 by asking golfers to add $1 or more to greens fees in support of the Folds of Honor Foundation when they play on Patriot Golf Day, which takes place during Labor Day weekend.
Rooney started the Folds of Honor Foundation because he wanted to create an organization to provide educational opportunities for family members of soldiers who died or became disabled while serving their country.
Rooney, who has served three combat tours in Iraq, was inspired to begin the foundation while witnessing the grief of family members at the flag-draped casket of Cpl. Brock Bucklin, who was killed in Iraq.
Patriot Golf Day is the foundation's annual fundraiser. Golfers who have donated money beyond greens fees that day have helped raise more than $3 million to provide scholarships for more than 550 families in the last two years.
Sunday's ceremony will include performances from a local choir, members of the Owasso High School band and the Claremore High School Navy Junior ROTC exhibition drill squad.
