Multiple accidents claim six
By World Staff
Published:

Last Modified: 11/8/2009 5:01 AM
Six people died in crashes on northeastern Oklahoma roads Friday and Saturday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
Dead are: Henry Young, 59, of Okmulgee; Jordan Leland, 22, of Tulsa; Gary Wray, 35, of Coweta; Alan Herren, 22, of Tulsa; Jacob Allen, 14, of McAlester; and Robert E. Ketcher, 48, of Park Hill.
Young was driving on Oklahoma 16 west of Beggs about 5 p.m. Friday when his car traveled left of center and was struck by tractor trailer, according to OHP reports. He was pinned in his vehicle for approximately 1 1/2 hours and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
The drivers of both vehicles were wearing seat belts, according to OHP reports.
Leland was driving a 1997 Ford pickup truck north in a southbound lane on Muskogee Turnpike in Wagoner County at 9:10 p.m. Friday when he struck the side of a 2005 Nissan driven by Sonya Gibson, 47, of Muskogee, troopers said. Gibson and a passenger in her vehicle were treated and released from a nearby hospital.
Leland continued driving northbound and crashed head-on into a 2007 Toyota pickup truck driven by Wray.
Leland was pronounced dead at the scene, OHP said. Wray, who was pinned in the vehicle for 45 minutes, was taken to St. John Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, OHP said.
His son, Dylan Wray, 12, a passenger, was treated and released from St. John Medical Center.
Allen died in a crash about 7:30 a.m. Saturday in Pittsburg County.
Charles Allen was traveling north on Bache Road when he failed to stop for a stop sign at U.S. 270 and struck another car, OHP reported.
The accident caused his son, Jacob, to be ejected from the vehicle, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers were treated and released at McAlester Regional Health Center.
The drivers were both wearing their seat belts, but the younger Allen was not, according to OHP reports.
Herren was driving a motorcycle on Summerfield Road about two miles west of Jay in Delaware County at a high rate of speed and failed to navigate a turn at about 12:15 p.m. Saturday, according to OHP reports.
His motorcycle ran off the road and struck an embankment, troopers said. He was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene.
Herren was wearing a helmet, according to OHP reports.
Ketcher died after his 2005 Yamaha motorcycle was struck by another vehicle on U.S. 62, four miles west of Tahlequah in Cherokee County at 3:42 p.m. Saturday, the OHP reported.
Ketcher, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead, troopers said.

Justun,
You are right. The twisties on these roads are some of the best. Alan I feel for your family and friends. Tragic for sure. I took a 200 mile ride out to lake Ten Killer today on the Hayabusa and just west of Tahlequah on Hwy 62 there looked to be another motorcycle fatality accident. People, know your limits and your bike's limits. I'm so sorry for the family.

Justun,
Yea,
It's really hard to keep from going directly to jail speed on these bikes. The power and technology this bike and all of the modern sport/hyper sport bikes of today can get even the most experienced rider in trouble in the blink of an eye. My FZ1 & VFR 800 Interceptor can get me in trouble as well. Again my thoughts with the family.
Justun and all sport touring enthusiast need to google "Motorcycle sport touring association" if you would like to ride with the real hard core bikers who ride smart, fast but safe.

Jacob was a friend of my daughter, by all accounts a fine young man. I know that he will be greatly missed by all that knew him. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Allen family.

I was behind the crash on the Muskogee Turnpike. It was devastating to witness the fire and be unable to do anything. My prayers are with the family of the Wrays. How does someone end up driving the wrong way on the Turnpike? Did they do a u-turn on their side of the road? It would be pretty near impossible to get ON the turnpike in the wrong direction.

Condolences to all.
I am a "former" bike rider who saw my life flash before me during a high speed wobble on I-44. I let the bike go and slid on nearly all parts of my body. Lucky to be alive although I do miss riding alot!

Unfortunately I was right about the wreck I saw yesterday on hwy 62. I don't know if wearing a helmet would have saved his life but it wouldn't have hurt. I get so mad when I see these idiots tooling around on 1000 lb. bikes not wearing a full face helmet. It's the most important safety article you have. Why do you think articles like this mention if a helmet was worn? I've never read an article stating that the rider wasn't wearing gloves or armored riding gear. It make absolutely zero sense to me. In fact it utterly defies logic what so ever. I don't even wave at these knuckle heads.
Still my condolences to the Ketcher family. I knew when I saw a man next to the bike on one knee and his hand covering his face that it was not good.
Ok all you haters bring it on!

Justun,
I've been tuning on the Corvette all weekend. Thought it was plugs and points. Nothing helped....
...then I found a Haybusa lodged in one of the tailpipes. It was choking the engine...

Justun,
I agree with you but having owned bikes like Gold Wings and BMW the full face helmet can be extremely uncomfortable when it's over 90 deg. So I solved the dilemma and all I ride now is sport/sport touring machines. I bought the Icon white and silver Hayabusa helmet. You should check it out. I've had numerous complements on it and the fit is outstanding, Frank Thomas gloves, leathers w/ armor & boots.
What scares me the most is seeing female riders wearing a bathing suit top and Flip flops. I in-vision scabs with yucky stuff....well you get the idea
Corvetteguy you are right up there with Harley guy. You can read between the lines on this one. I have a corvette to but would NEVER use it as my handle.

Catman'smom, you can get turned around on the turnpike at the McDonald's/Gas station area if you enter back on the turnpike from the exit ramp. Unfortunately, if you aren't paying attention, you can get turned around and not notice till it too late that you are going the wrong way. I too, was on that road about three miles behind the accident. We sat there for two hours before we finally turned around on the shoulder and travedl back to where OHP was directing us to go. They had removed one of the concrete dividers from the middle and was directing traffic back into Tulsa.
