A downtown parade followed by an evening United Service Organizations show will be held Wednesday as Tulsa and area residents gather to celebrate Veterans Day.

The theme of this year's parade is "Home of the Free ... Because of the Brave." The parade marshal will be decorated World War II veteran Paul J. Andert of Tulsa.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Third Street between Boston Avenue and Main Street and will wind its way along Third Street, Boulder Avenue, Seventh Street, back to Boston Avenue and end at Sixth Street and Detroit Avenue.

Residents are expected to begin lining downtown streets for the parade as early as 9 a.m. Officials said KTUL-TV Channel 8 will carry a live broadcast.

Officials from Tulsa's American Legion Post 1 said this year's parade will feature a mounted cavalry show team from Fort Sill.

Parade-goers will also be treated to marching bands from Tulsa schools, Junior ROTC drill teams and a collection of assorted vintage military vehicles.

Rick Alfaro of American Legion Post 1 said thousands of Tulsa schoolchildren will be bused to the parade and each will receive a small American flag, courtesy of the legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 577.

The VFW post, located at 1109 E. Sixth St., will kick off the day with a free breakfast for all veterans and their families.

The breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and will offer eggs, potatoes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, along with coffee and juice.

After the parade ends, American Legion Post 1 at 1120 E. Eighth St. will offer veterans and their families a free lunch of pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad and beverages.

Meanwhile, Tulsa Elks Lodge 946, located at 5335 S. Harvard Ave., will stage a Bob Hope-styled USO show and ice-cream social beginning at 7 p.m.

The show is open to the public, but seating is limited to 350 people. Reservations can be made by calling 742-2401.

Kristi Briggs, the lodge's veterans programs chairwoman, said the show will feature a variety of Tulsa's impersonators performing in roles including Bob Hope, the Andrews Sisters, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Lamour.

The show will honor veterans and the Blue Star Mothers of Oklahoma for their efforts to send care packages to troops serving overseas.

Although the show is free, patrons are asked to bring sundries and other items for the Blue Star Mothers to continue sending packages to the troops.

A list of specific items needed can be found at tulsaworld.com/bluestar .
