An overloaded extension cord led to a fire that killed several pets at an apartment building Sunday evening.

The blaze began about 5:20 p.m. in the 8500 block of East 25th Street at the Virginia Lee Apartments, Fire Department spokesman Bill French said.

A tenant had left the apartment about two hours earlier, leaving her three dogs and two cats inside. Firefighters removed the animals from the unit, but were only able to revive one of the cats, French said.

An investigation revealed that an extension cord that was underneath a blanket was the likely cause of the fire. A damage estimate was not available.
