NOWATA — A Tulsa man with previous convictions for drunken driving was charged Tuesday in Nowata County with three counts of second-degree murder alleging that he killed three people by driving under the influence.

Charles Davis Strong Jr., 45, appeared in Nowata County District Court on charges related to the deaths of Kyler Blagg, 15, and his mother, Amy Blagg, 44, both of Caney, Kan., and Alfred Hobbs, 70, of South Coffeyville.

They were killed in a May 9 traffic accident on U.S. 169 near Delaware.

Bail for Strong is set at $500,000.

A police affidavit alleges that Strong had been drinking heavily when he climbed behind the wheel of a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe over the objections of his friend Brent Radke.

Strong was angry and was driving about 110 mph at the time of the crash, Radke told authorities.

"Radke said Strong became so enraged that he started throwing punches at him as he was driving," the affidavit states.

"Shortly after the physical altercation, Strong began to pass a semi and was meeting a line of cars.

"Radke said he thought 'it would be the end' and they would hit the cars head on. The line of cars had to swerve to miss them."

Witnesses told authorities that the Bel Air didn't have enough room to pass the tractor-trailer rig and ran a vehicle driven by Kyler Blagg off the highway. Blagg overcorrected and crossed the center line, hitting Hobbs' vehicle head-on, authorities said.

The Bel Air was
one of several classic cars owned by Jerry Line of Coweta, who had entered the vehicles in a Cherryvale, Kan., car show that weekend.

Line, Strong and Radke visited a Cherryvale bar after the car show, the affidavit states.

Line told police he noticed that Strong had a lot to drink at the bar and told Radke to drive the car back to his Tulsa-area home.

Radke initially was the driver of the Bel Air, but the car overheated along the way, prompting the pair to stop for a repair.

Strong then moved into the driver's seat and refused to get out, the affidavit states.

A Jan. 13 preliminary hearing is set for Strong, who has three felony convictions in Tulsa County for driving under the influence.

3 previous felony DUIs with jail time??? WHY was this guy allowed to drive again? Too bad people had to die for him to learn his lesson.

Driving angrily drunk in a 55 Chevy is like operating a tank...I'd hate to be in his shoes.

This scumbag should not ever be allowed to drive a vehicle again.
Stupid from alcohol consumption is never a satisfactory excuse.
He's an adult, he made the decision to drink and drive and he should pay the ultimate penalty for the result of his actions.

Where is the "tort reform" crowd to weigh in about how there should be limits on what the survivors could collect in cases like this?

Well, I'm gonna beat the dead horse again but here goes. He needs to be executed. He's been convicted three times previously and has served prison time for DUI and still didn't learn a lesson. Now he's caused the death of three innocent people. He should pay with his life. Why should the taxpayers of the broke state of Oklahoma have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to incarcerate him for the rest of his life? Until the public get fed up with these senseless deaths caused by scummy deadbeats with no consideration for the welfare of others we will continue to see these types of tragedies. It's sick and pathetic.

This guy had 4 DUIs before he was accepted in the Tulsa Drug/DUI court. He graduated. Then he kills 3 people. Judge Sarah SMith should be held accountable and given a lethal injection.

My personal opinion is that neither of these guys are innocent. Radke knew that they were involved in this a short time later. If he is so innocent, why didn't he come to the police long ago and tell them? The "nightmare" story is a bit over the top. Looks like he's doing everything possible to hang this all on Strong because Strong has all the DUI arrests and is going to go down anyway for having any involvement whatsoever. This would be very ironic if it turned out that it was Radke actually driving all along. Not that I don't think Strong screwed up, I just don't think Radke is completely innocent either! Something smells funny in his testimony!

So much alcohol, so much death...this could be avoided if car manufacturers would install a breathalyzer as a part of the car ignition mechanisms. Yes it might be punishing those of us who don't drink and drive, but wouldn't you feel safer when you see the car in front of you weaving strangely, if this was just a given fact??

Granted there will be people who will make someone else test for them, but sometimes that is not an option.

Also we need to have stronger penalties for driving intoxicated, and mandatory prison sentence lengths for drunken involvement in accidents and especially when there are fatalities. No plea bargains...no bleeding heart negotioting.

While it may be your right to drink, it is not your right to drink and drive.

If Radke was initially driving sounds like he WAS trying to do his part for safety. As to liability, the car owner was drinking with both Radke and Strong but all were ok to drive. And yes, if they were all that wasted...the bar owner is partly responsible as well. Interested to see how this all turns out in court. Cases don't get filed by the D.A. without a chance of winning in court...hence the complaints about all the cases where charges are NOT filed. Prayers to all involved.

IF Radke was driving I said...reports all state it was Strong driving after the car was fixed on the roadside. Radke appears to have been trying to get all home safely until after the car repairs. THEN Strong was driving and Radke was doing the trying to calm down while Strong was hitting and cursing him. Strong was the inattentive driver by his own admission, but both made it safely home. Too bad Strong is so stupid! And a multiple DUI convicted felon. He has remorse I am sure...but not enough to bring these people back. And now Radke will have to testify against a friend due to his honesty with investigators. YES, this should never have happened...but the one behind the wheel is the one in control of the vehicle...not the passenger.

Send him to Jail for Life. It's time to get this stupid man of the streets before he kills others.

I hope the family is still coping and managing the best they can with this tragedy; love to them all!

My ex grew up with both Brent and Davey, I personally only know Brent. I agree with the comments towards Davey, he should not have been driving. I dont feel that Brent should have all the blame placed on him, he did try and get Davey out of the driver seat. He has to live with knowing that he played a part in the killing of three people. Its really easy for everyone to say "well I would have" but nobody can REALLY say what they would do unless you are in that situation. My thoughts go out to the families.
