Oklahoma tribes scurry to develop stimulus projects
More than $135 million has been awarded.

With more than $135 million in federal stimulus money awarded to them, Oklahoma's Indian tribes are hastily developing projects ranging from housing construction to Head Start programs.
The stimulus money has come so fast and unexpectedly to the tribes that at least one Oklahoma tribal official admitted being a bit bewildered.
When asked how many jobs the Apache Tribe had created with a $31,372 child care and development grant, a tribal representative told the federal government: "I have not created any jobs with the stimulus money. I don't know what to do with the money."
Most tribes, however, seem to have detailed plans for the windfall.

Hmmm I wonder why some tribes get a huge lump sum and others get a small chunk and other tribes got left out in the cold. I can't believe Tonkawa got that much money. How many casinos they got? two?

I'm thankful we got anything. I'm sure much will go out into the communities.

maybe they could give it all to state education if they truly don't know what to do with it. like the tribes don't have enough money from casinos and other assistance. come on federal gov.

Sounds like Ready, Fire, Aim. Borrow money to give to people who don't expect it, who now have to develop projects to spend it and hope that at the end of the spending at least one new job is created.

I do have one message for Chad Smith and the CN: GIVE VOCATIONAL REHAB SOME MONEY & HIGHER EDUCATION! The one thing I cannot believe is that Cherokee Nation does NOT support those who have disabilities that want to work. They make the people who need wheelchairs or ramps go to the white government to apply for it. Also, these Indian kids who want to improve themselves get stipends of like $250 a semester to help with books and other education requirement. This is shameful.

"Most tribes, however, seem to have detailed plans for the windfall."
well now,.....isn't that just...special...?
States, Cities, and Towns had to have detailed "shovel-ready" projects to even get a remote chance of getting stimulous money to help the masses..
The tribes were handed "cash" with no detailed plans in place.
Maybe the tribes can build more smoke shops. That surely would had a dosen more indian employees or so... and give more healthcare workers jobs to treat the increased cancer patients.

Oh for pete sakes! It has been years and years and years since the white man took the Indians' land. It has been years and years and years since the black man was moved from Africa to America and use in slavery. Get over it. None of you were alive when those things took place. That was many decades. even centuries ago. Talk about beating a dead horse.
We are all Americans, period....well except for the illegals living among us.

It has been years since the White man took... took and enslaved but, it has not been that long ago that my grandpa and grandma along with my other elder relatives were taken from their homes as children and put in boarding schools where they were forced to learn a different culture, religion and were forced to speak english. some of the things that were done to them... unspeakable. I for one, had nothing done wrong to me so therefore, I don't get government help or health benefits. But whatever goes to my grandfather the last of the surviving elders of our tribe... rightly so I believe!

Probably the most honest answer out of all "I have not created any jobs with the stimulus money. I don’t know what to do with the money.”
.
I will look at that as a positive answer, perhaps studying to see where it can be best used.

How much will the Five Tribes share with their Freedmen members? The Tribes that allow their Freedmen to be members, that is.

The very best way to inhibit free expression in these threads is to criticize spelling and grammar. Inappropriate in all cases.

Amen Newsmax...that's why they don't want to give any of the money to the freedmen (black) who were wronged just as much as they were. Let's just give welfare to everybody. Hell, I don't want to go to work tomorrow either.

Maybe they can build some more tin buildings to house their casinos and smoke shops - they're beautiful. Apparently none of the indian kids ever get architecture degrees with all of the school money they get from the tribes.

Are there any "open-minded" folks who still cannot see the "stimulus" was nothing more than a giveaway spending bill? Head Start? Good grief.

I am a small business owner and have an electrical contracting company. One year ago my company was hired by a general contractor to do the electrical wiring on 2 new buildings for the Shawnee tribe. The money was federal money given to the indians to be used for this project. They still owe me over $60,000.00 for the project. I have an attorney, but he is doing nothing to help me. He doubts that we will recover the money as you cannot sue the tribes!!!! The economy has taken its toll on my company and this was a big blow for my business. One I probably wont recover from. What about us small business owners that really need the help from the stimulus money? We provide jobs to people and yet we are overlooked. When will this end? What can we do?

grandlakeok - find an attorney that will work on a contengency type basis - he won't get paid unless you get paid. They most usually work harder if they have to work for their money. If I were you I would keep an injunction against them for as long as it takes them to payoff the debt. I have heard this same thing about the Cherokees as a friend of mine did work for them and took forever to get his money. When they called him to do more work for them he declinded. If you are in business for yourself you cannot have thousands of dollars on the books because these deadbeats won't pay.
