New security measures coming to county courthouse

NORMAN, Okla. — New security measures will be in place starting next week at the Cleveland County courthouse.

Sheriff Joe Lester announced the measures after recent security-related incidents, including one earlier this month in which a deputy was stabbed in court while struggling with a man who cut his own throat with an X-Acto knife after his probation was revoked.

The new security measures will include an operational X-ray machine and metal detector. Lester says anyone entering the building will have hand-carried items run through the machine and will have to walk through the metal detector.

He says the building's north and south doors will be locked and used only in emergencies. The east doors will be locked and manned by a deputy who will allow access only to court officials with proper identification and employees.

Why did this take so long? There is no telling how many weapons came through this courthouse unnoticed.

Talk about shutting the barn door after the horse is already gone.

lol oldrustytulsa.....good one! lol

My sentiments exactly Ignatz. I thought the article was about the Tulsa County Courthouse, and I was going to be shocked that they didn't have security measures.

Man some of those detectors are so sensitive they can tell if you have iron in your blood.

Cleveland is a redneck bastion. But it's closer than B Ville. So this is closer to local.

I wonder how they will send a prisoner through a metal detector without handcuffs or shackles.

Yeah, I know that my work boots set off the metal detector in the municipal courthouse here in Tulsa, the metal shims in the soles are enough to get me wanded after beeping on my way through.
