A new CEO for the Tulsa City-County Library system is expected to be hired by May 1 and will be paid $130,000 to $150,000 a year, according to an update given to commissioners Thursday.

Commissioners hired Gossage Sager Associates of Kansas City last month to handle the search. The proposed fee for the search is $16,500.

Commissioner Charles Meyers Jr. said the top administrator will retain the CEO title and the same duties.

He said the pay range is in the middle of salaries paid to regional library directors. The CEO must hold a master's degree in library science.

The CEO's responsibilities include focusing on fundraising, strategic direction and policies, long-range planning and community relations.

Day-to-day operations are handled by the chief operating officer.

Applications will be sought through February.

The search firm and a library committee will narrow the field before conducting final interviews.

Commissioners said the public will have a chance to meet the finalists before a candidate is hired.

Former CEO Linda Saferite announced Aug. 4 that she would be on extended medical leave until she retires in March.

She received an annual compensation package of about $175,000, including salary, deferred compensation and retirement benefits.

Saferite also had an automobile allowance of $5,400 a year, five weeks of vacation and eight personal days.

She had worked from home two days a week until the commissioners rescinded that arrangement in July.

Chief Operating Officer Laurie Sundborg has taken on additional duties as the interim CEO.

Shouldn't be hard to find a very talented and qualified at that price. After all the last CEO did the job in two days a week.
