Keeping them warm, fed
Girl Scout will deliver Thanksgiving goodness
Hannah Kinnison (right) and her great-aunt Sue Miller organize donated items for families in Lake Crest and the Chouteau-Mazie school district as part of Kinnison's work toward a Girl Scout Gold Award. CORY YOUNG / Tulsa World

With all of the good that's happened in Hannah Kinnison's life, she's spreading the love this Thanksgiving.
As part of a project to help her attain a Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, Kinnison plans to deliver food and 73 boxes of clothes to low-income children in the Lake Crest community and Chouteau-Mazie school district in Chouteau, about 40 miles east of Tulsa.
She has dubbed the project HUGS, or Hats, Underwear, Gloves and Socks.
Children need clothes so they can focus on education, which helps to motivate students living in poverty, Kinnison said.
She said she was inspired to do the project after visiting the Chouteau-Mazie school district and witnessing some students in poor living conditions.
"I take everything I have for granted," said Kinnison, 18, of her reason to help others.
On Sunday, Kinnison and volunteers will host a Thanksgiving dinner in Chouteau, after which the clothes will be donated.
"Serving others is a gift that I have," said Kinnison, a member of Troop 372.
Kinnison and others at Miller Swim School, where she is a lifeguard, have also collected food items such as macaroni, crackers, peanut butter, popcorn, fruit snacks, and granola bars for Lake Crest residents.
The food will be stored in a pantry at Lake Crest Community Church and made available to residents.
As another part of Kinnison's project, she had to put in 40 career hours and 30 leadership hours.
Kinnison spent most of the career hours at the swim school and also participated in several counseling and leadership camps.
Kinnison has been a Girl Scout since she attended Monte Cassino school. She started out with 10 other girls, but only four of that group remain. The remaining Girl Scouts also are working toward their Gold Awards.
A senior at Booker T. Washington High School, Kinnison plans to attend the University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma Baptist University.

Good work Hannah for helping those out in Mazie-Choteau. You are a role model for other young people to follow. Remember your volunteerism throughout your life and you will be blessed. What we get in our heart from giving is better than any material thing.

After news article after news article about young people and the crimes that they commit, it is so heartwarming to read about this young lady. You are not only a role model for other young people, but hopefully to all adults also. On another note, remember...the red kettles are out and the bells are ringing...give some folding money along with that change.

My father was a professional charity abuser and user and for all my life I have felt that all who give are good people but are not really helping, only being used.
