Minister named national organization president

The Rev. M.C. Potter, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, has been named national president of One Church, One Child, an organization that finds adoptive homes and foster homes for children in the child welfare system.

Potter has been president of the board of directors of the Oklahoma chapter of One Church, One Child since 1995.

In collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, the organization works through churches and other groups to explain the needs of children, specifically black children.

Nativity scene to reflect culture of Jesus' time

Crossroads Community Church in Wagoner will host a free Living Nativity from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Dec. 6, with a hay ride through several scenes depicting the biblical story of the birth of Jesus.

Actors and scenes will reflect the culture into which Jesus was born.

Refreshments will be served.

The event will be on 19th Street in Wagoner, a half mile east of U.S. 69.

Concert to focus on supporting teens

The Tulsa Dream Center, 200 W. 46th St. North, will host a free 2009 Taking Back Our Youth Concert from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, with music, door prizes and food.

The concert will feature Deja Cue, Dove the Warrior, Electric Minute, Raw Dawg Madd Judge and many others.

Katherine Richard, president and founder of Urban Vine Promotions and Productions, organizer of the event, said, "We must work together as a community to see real change, and as we support our youth, we have a strong accountability, as they are our new generation."

The Dream Center is an outreach of Victory Christian Church. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Sonic Drive-in are among the concert sponsors.

Church celebrating 75th anniversary and history

East Side Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1438 South Indianapolis Ave., will celebrate its 75th anniversary Sunday.

The celebration will begin with a fellowship time at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. service and then dinner. In addition to the main celebration, a youth group reunion will be held Saturday.

The church began worship services in 1933 in Tulsa Little Theatre. The congregation dedicated its first building in March 1936. It was designed so that it could be used as a movie theater in case the church failed. No movie was ever shown in the sanctuary, but members still use the plush theater seating.

In December 1948 a fire destroyed much of the church's new education building. The week before, the Rev. Paul McBride's sermon was entitled, "All I Want for Christmas is $7,000." When the insurance settlement for fire damage came to exactly $7,000, McBride became known as "Arson Parson."

Historic Tulsa church celebrating 110 years

The historic First Baptist Church North Tulsa will celebrate its 110th anniversary this weekend with a 6:30 p.m. Saturday organ concert and worship services at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall are among the history-makers who have spoken at the historic black church at 1414 N. Greenwood Ave.

The church has had 14 pastors, including present pastor the Rev. Anthony L. Scott.

Guest speakers at the celebration will be the Revs. C.J. Duvall of Little Rock, Ark., and Ernest A. Hickerson Sr. of Pensacola, Fla.
