The Tulsa County District Attorney's Office is inviting those affected by violent crime to decorate a Christmas tree this holiday season.

A tree-lighting ceremony will be 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Buddy LaFortune Community Center, 5202 S. Hudson Ave., and trees will be on display throughout the holidays, according to a press release.

Survivors of violent crimes across northeastern Oklahoma are invited and encouraged to participate. Ornaments may be anything that has meaning to the survivor, as long as it is of appropriate size to hang on a tree.

"The Christmas holidays bring joy to many, but for those who have lost a loved one or survived a trauma of violent crime, this time can be especially difficult," Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris said in the release.

"It is our hope that this tree-lighting ceremony will be one small step on the path to heal from the trauma of a violent crime."

Survivors of violent crime will hang the ornaments during the ceremony, but those unable to attend may mail an ornament to be placed on the tree.

Ornaments will be stored until next season.

Participants may make reservations to participate or mail ornaments by Monday to Gayla Stewart, Victim/Witness Coordinator in the U.S. Attorney's Office, 110 W. 7th St., Suite 300, Tulsa, OK 74119.

The tree should be full this year unfortunately. It's been a bad year for Tulsa homicide deaths and injuries.

Agreed, Elusive. Ironically, it's been a bad year this year mostly due to the incompetence of Tim Harris and Doug Drummond. It's time to vote them out of office and get some new leadership.

I'm sure the last thing on their minds is decorating a tree in front of a bunch of strangers. These people are fragile and should be treated as much.

Participating in a ceremony celebrating the life of a loved one can go a long way to heal a broken heart. Lovely idea.

Everyone deals differently with the loss of a loved one because of a violent crime. I think of those who can gather and share, I am glad they can. I think I might do that but I know I won't. After 20 years it is just as hard today as it was the night we got the horrible news about our son.

The DA is responsible for the number of homicides and the amount of crime in Tulsa...well, then, maybe you right..we should throw them all out of office. I did not know it was that easy.
