7,000 runners compete in perfect weather
Runners head south on Riverside Drive during the 2009 Williams Route 66 Marathon. SHERRY BROWN / Tulsa World

Ron Pace of Broken Arrow wishes he hadn't waited until 45 to start running, but that's when the inspiration hit him — his son joined the Navy.
Blake Pace, 19, will ship out in February, so his father decided to run the Route 66 Marathon with him. Blake Pace ran with his squad, but what mattered to his father was that they were both involved.
"Just to know we were out there together somewhere was worth it," said Pace, who ran the half-marathon.
With perfect weather Sunday morning, the Route 66 Marathon included 7,000 runners, 60 classic cars, 30 live bands and one Guinness World Record winner.
First-place runner Zac Freudenburg of St. Louis beat the record for running a marathon while pushing a stroller. His record time while pushing 10-month-old Liam was 2:32:10.
The event featured a new route to show off downtown Tulsa, and boasted nearly twice the participation as last year in the 5K and relay runs.
Ron Pace said he enjoyed the entertainment throughout the route, as well as the supporters.
"They don't even know you, but they're sitting in their lawn chairs clapping for you," he said.
Michelle Alexander, who also finished the half-marathon, agreed that the event was fun and successful.
"It was a great run," she said.
She and her friends from Prague — Kim Riggs, Vallery Feltman and Cyndi Holik — ran in remembrance of their partner Colleen Cleveland.
Cleveland collapsed and died during a training run in preparation for the Route 66 Marathon. She had a pre-existing heart condition, Alexander said.
"She had a passion for running and for life in general," she said.
The race was the biggest yet for Route 66 organizers.
Participation in the marathon grew about 35 percent, and registration in the 5K run and relay were up by 134 percent and 171 percent respectively, officials said
Ron Pace and several other runners thanked the 1,300 race week volunteers who helped put the event together.
"It was well worth the effort and the time I put in for this," he said.

Guinness record set
The battle of the strollers continued Sunday with Zac Freudenburg of St. Louis setting a new Guinness World Record on Sunday for running a marathon while pushing a stroller.
Freudenburg, pushing his son Liam, 10 months, was the firstplace finisher in Sunday’s Route 66 Marathon for strollers, at 2:32:10.
Finishing two minutes later was previous record holder Michael Wardian of arlington, Va., who was pushing his 11-month-old son, Grant.
The two elite runners, equipped with special jogging strollers, have competed in several marathons throughout the country.

How cool! What a neat thing to be able to tell your friends in school. How many preschool kids can say they helped set a world record?

messy, he has a 2:20 marathon to his credit, which is the olympic qualifying standard for men. Great to have those two world class athletes in Tulsa!

I think this was a great idea, but consider another day other than Sunday. It took me 3 different attempts to get to church this morning. Very inconsiderate for those people who attend services in downtown Tulsa. And when you told the police officer "my church is only a block a way", she was really nasty about it instead of letting us go 1 block. Heck, Tulsa seems to have a run for just about everything. For those of us who live in the downtown area, it really is inconvenient. Do something out at Mohawk....no traffic interruption plus it's really quite pretty.

Selfish dads??? Having children be part of their lives, while doing what they love is a selfish thing?? What about the 4,000 dads who ran today's race WITHOUT their children. What would you call them? Do you know how many hours they must train WITH their children each week? If more dads would spend that kind of time with their children, I think we would have better behaved children in our country.

This Marathon filled the Marathon Board of Directors' coffers, supplied a disproportionately small donation to the United Way and kept thousands of people from exercising their right and to worship God during the traditionally established hours of Worship for MOST Tulsans.
Thanks Route 66 Board of Directors !

PhoenixIX,
hmmm . . . so thousands of Tulsans can only worship God during specific times of the day and only at certain places. What a weak grasp or concept of religion/spirituality they have. Im glad that I am able to commune with God whenever and wherever.

One of the things Tulsa is known for is the number of thriving churches that we have downtown. To host such a large race on Sunday morning doesn't make sense. Why can't it be held on Saturday or in the Mohawk area, as Panza suggested? Thousands of people drive downtown every Sunday morning, and it would seem that the City of Tulsa is oblivious to this. Look at the map of street closings on the Route 66 site, and you'll see that downtown is blocked from the north, from the west, and from the south. Church members trying to enter the downtown area during the race are pretty much limited to 11th Street from the east or from expressways, and with construction on the inner-dispersal loop, even the expressway options are limited right now. No one I know has any objection to the Route 66 Marathon itself, but the time and location are not fair to those of us who worship downtown.

This is crazy. They look like lemmings running off the cliffs in Europe. Why would anyone want to do this, and how much did this cost the taxpayers? If you want to run, go run, but we don't need all this hubub.

I love how people gritch and gripe about how they weren't able to get to church. I believe I even read the words "its not fair." What a hoot.
Can you see these people in the first couple of centuries of Christianity?
"It doesn't make sense to feed us to the lions. Its just not fair. Why can't you feed someone else to the lions? I don't object to lions in general, but don't think you should be feeding us to them."
How about this? You downtown churches could turn events like this into opportunities to serve those who are running in the race. What a novel concept! Christians, SERVING others. Wow! Here was an opportunity to impact thousands of people, from every state, and from several countries. But all you can do is complain about how it inconvenienced you.
I hope that people will see that Christianity is not the shame that you folks make it sound like.

Care to elaborate? Or are you just pointing out that the world revolves around you? Even though there are many ways this could have been done without blocking off the majority of downtown, when the world revolves around you, you are entitled to reserve for your own recreation whatever suits you and block others from going where they need to go.

Tulsa's downtown churches serve the community in multiple ways. We serve meals to the homeless, we provide groceries and clothing to the working poor, we pay utility bills for those who can't. We send teams throughout the US and around the world to help others recover from hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. And yes, we worship on Sunday mornings because worship is as much a part of our faith as is service to others. The race could be moved to a Saturday and accommodate both racers and worshipers.
