OKLAHOMA CITY — University of Oklahoma surgeons used a new surgical technique to repair a Lawton newborn's malformed esophagus.

Daniela Cruz was born Nov. 4 with a congenital birth defect called esophageal atresia. Her upper esophagus failed to connect with her lower esophagus, which instead connected to her airway, or windpipe.

She was transported from a Lawton hospital to the Children's Hospital at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center.
