Injured goose is trapped, rescued
The wild bird is doing well and expected to survive after surgery to remove an arrow.

Not all wild goose chases end in disappointment.

After seeing a photo in Friday's Tulsa World showing a live Canada goose that had been shot through the chest with an arrow, master trapper Ned Bruha decided to try his hand at saving this almost cooked goose. Bruha operates a humane animal control/removal company called the Skunk Whisperer.

Bruha, who said he has failed many times in trapping wild geese, went with his team to capture the bird and bring him to Annette King Tucker, founder of Wild Heart Ranch Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation near Foyil.

"You just can't get them," Bruha said. "If the goose is faster than I am, which they usually are, it simply cannot be taken to a rehabber."

But after separating the bird from the flock at a pond in a gated community south of the Creek Turnpike near Harvard Avenue, Bruha and his team, which included his wife, Betsey Bruha, and Stormy Cole, threw a net around the fowl and cut off the front and back of the arrow so that the bird couldn't hurt itself in the kennel, he said.

The Skunk Whisperer team rushed the bird to Wild Heart Ranch northeast of Claremore.

"The Skunk Whisperer will do anything for Annette (Tucker) and other wildlife rehabbers — even go on a wild goose chase and hop into an icy cold November pond," Bruha said.

After the goose arrived at Wild Heart Ranch, Tucker was able to remove the arrow completely, which had passed through a joint, pinning the wing to the goose's side.

Tucker judged the arrow may have been in the goose's side for a month because it had become ingrown.

Tucker said the bird will likely not fly again.

But the goose was happy and calm Friday night. Tucker said the goose, which she named Target, will be fine in several weeks and will be released at a pond that has a year-round flock of Canada geese that don't migrate. Tucker said the public should not feed birds because they stop migrating if they have food and then can get caught in harsh winters.

Wild Heart Ranch, a nonprofit organization, started 14 years ago and is one of only two sanctuaries in Oklahoma that accept any animal. Tucker has deer, bobcats, skunks, owls and even a cougar. Wild Heart Ranch helps about 1,000 animals each year, she said.

"I love my job," Tucker said. "I've taken four days off in 14 years. You've got to be some kind of a nut to do this."

What a beautiful story. Thank you Ned. Thank you Betsey, Stormy, Annette. And thank you Jarrel for covering it. Lame geese won't sell as much ad space as warfare or politics, but it sure warms the heart at the tail end of an insane black friday.

And to the brave hunter that shot the goose. You are so brave to take on a dangerous Canadian goose the way you did. I bet your really proud.

skunk whisperer, dog whisperer, ghost whisperer, My God can't anyone come up with their own original names anymore, seems to me like everyone just wants to copy off everyone else s paper. but I guess its like I heard about Oklahoma when I asked, why they called them Sooner's. They jumped the gun at the land rush and have just been a bunch of crooks ever since. true so true.

Scringe is that short for Scrooge?

The Bruha family, Mr. Stormy Cole, and The Wild Heart Ranch Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation deserve huge kudos in helping animals save & rehab animals. Their reward is in their work.

Skunk Whisperer hahahahaha. Funny name, serious business, good cause. I viewed their web page today. Informative!!!! A few typos so I called their number to let them know. They were appreciatively responsive. Clearly good people working for a good cause.

The goose is doing great this morning. My fears of fluid building up were unfounded. Upon exam of the bird, the arrow missed everything vital and was through the wing, pinning it to the breast of the bird. Miserable for her, and the wing joint is forever destroyed. She has been this way for a very long time.
This goose was shot on this pond while swimming. The way the wing was pinned tells all. Since this was a gaited community, Im sure the shooter is most likely a resident or visitor. The arrows are unusual and easy to identify. If anyone knows the shooter, might tell them this bird is Federally protected and the felony for shooting her is a $5,000 fine and/or 5 years imprisonment. She will require a lifetime of care if we cannot integrate her with a non migratory flock.
My job is not to punish or prosecute people. I only care for the animals that suffer for their actions, but I would like to know that they realize that this act did not end when the arrow left their bow. This is years of obligation for those of us who work against suffering.
Thank you to the staff of the Tulsa World and Ned Bruha and his crew for taking action to help this goose. Her health will recover, but she has seen her last flight in life.

I guess Scringe didn't get that $7.00 Big Screen at Big Lots at 3:00AM. Seems to have ruined his day and his attitude.

Catch, prosecute, and if found guilty take the perp to the lake, tie him to a tree and let me take a few shots with a crossbow. I'll aim to injure so he won't be able to walk again but I assure you I won't be a very good shot.

This story made my day.
I always look for a story with a happy ending and this one fits the bill!
May God Bless Ned Bruha, Betsy Bruha, Stormy Cole and Annette Tucker.
Target is a very lucky goose, I’m glad she’s doing well.
There is a special place in heaven for people who help injured and abandoned animals and birds.
It would be gratifying if the person who shot this arrow were identified and made to see the consequences of their senseless act, but I won’t count on that happening.
Target is doing well and that’s a great ending to this article!

Great work, to all that helped and reported. I am obviously a bird lover and I have assisted in a few events similar to this. The Tulsa area has been over populated with these geese but there are other measures to deal with that. I do hope the person responsible is caught and punished.

During this “season of giving” please seriously consider donating funds and supplies to wildlife rehabilitators such as Annette King-Tucker.

Thanks to wildlife rehabilitator Annette King-Tucker, this animal will live to see another day. We salute wildlife rehabilitators all over the world who have selflessly dedicated their lives to saving the animals that we place in these situations.

Annette is my hero and has made me a better person, allowing me massive amounts of knowledge, via her experience, to further assist wildlife in need of rehabilitation.

Oh, "Scringe", we did not name our business... our clients insisted we change our name to The Skunk Whisperer, Inc.

Annette Tucker King and all of the Skunk Whisperer's team have my heartfelt appreciation for this merciful rescue.
I am sure many find it very saddening to contemplate the pain the goose must have suffered. In helping the wounded bird, these dedicated rescuers have applied a balm to our aching hearts. Thank you - Annette KInd Tucker, Ned and Betsy Bruha and Stormy Cole.

Scringe - seems you're rather in the minority here, with your lack of compassion likely reflecting your true nature - what, your Mommy didn't give you love or enough huggies? You where likely the neighborhood bully, the one who abused defenseless animals for kicks - make you feel really tough and in control did it? Well you still aren't either, and especially not here!
.
You sound really sad, mad at the world, or maybe just mad you lost an arrow?
