Gangs growing slowly, gaining tech savvy
A survey shows gang members are using Facebook and YouTube to recruit.

Gang members in Oklahoma are using cell phones and text messaging to conduct criminal activities and Internet social media such as Facebook and YouTube to recruit members as young as second grade, according to a survey of gang activity in the state.
The survey, a follow-up to a 2006 study, shows Oklahoma's increase in gang members the past three years is relatively small compared with the rest of the country. But youths in the state are joining gangs at an earlier age, and gang members are becoming more prone to violence.
"You're seeing more recruiting done to the younger population," said Michael Wilds, an associate professor of criminal justice and legal studies at Northeastern State University and author of the report.
Oklahoma City and Tulsa officers reported gang members as young as 10, compared with the youngest being identified as 12 years old three years ago. Oklahoma City officers reported that some children are recruited as young as age 8, the survey states.
Gang concentrations
The largest concentration of gangs and associated gang members was found in Oklahoma’s major metropolitan areas. Oklahoma, Tulsa and Comanche counties were found to have nearly 60 percent of Oklahoma’s 1,026 gangs. Seven counties in the state were found to have 717 gangs, or 70 percent of the gangs in the state.
The top seven counties, number of gangs and percentage of the gangs in the state in their county are:
Oklahoma County:
234 gangs, 23 percent.
Tulsa County:
223 gangs, 22 percent.
Comanche County:
157 gangs, 15 percent.
Cleveland County:
40 gangs, 4 percent.
Pottawatomie County:
32 gangs, 3 percent.
LeFlore County:
16 gangs, 2 percent.
Carter County:
15 gangs, 2 percent.

You say it like it's a bad thing that these people document their activities. Doesn't that make it easier for them to be identified. Just a shot in the dark. But Nutt is making a shout in the dark.

I dunno does FFA count. An organized group bent on victimization of pigs cows and chickens. Isn't that how a vegan sees it.

What about a boot camp type school?
I also believe strongly there needs to be accountability by the parent.

back in 1930's.These youngsters would think twice about joining. They could enforce HARD LABOR such has breakingrock!

How much did the survey cost to find that gangmembers are using cell phones and texting? Everybody else already knew it.

Wow. Let's do it! Let's take the kids out of school. Why would we want them in an environment that could possibly open the door on choices other than gang membership? You are brilliant Insider.

Its all about the money. And the money comes from illegal drugs. The older gang members recruit the younger ones to do the dirty work and get arrested so they stay out of jail.
We are doing this to ourselves with the war on drugs. Its the same a prohibition did with alcohol.
Legalize drugs to make them cheap and you take away the incentive for gangs to exist. They are in it for the money while telling the youngsters that it is all about pride, etc.
Take away the money and watch the problem disappear.

Woofenburger you do have a point..but it looks as if law makers are not every going any were with it
and this will stay with us all a very long time.
The PR coming out of the TPD of late seems no more
then starting to do the jobs bring payed for on not only this subject but many other enforcements.
TPD..look into Chicago's cell and texts workup....

The problem is… all the bleeding hearts trying to save us from ourselves. I agree... this war on drugs is getting us nowhere. I believe that we live in a free country where if you want to kill yourself you should have the right. From that premise it isn’t what goes in a person that’s bad for society… it’s what comes out of them.
Stands to reason that to make an impact we must focus on hold people accountable for their actions. If you do a crime you pay the full extent of the penalty. If you ignore or abuse your family you are held accountable.
I pity these drunks and druggies who hang out on street corners begging for their next fix. But it’s their choice and you force someone change who doesn’t want to change.

bull. gangs exist for the same reason 99% of all other criminals exist. they don't like the idea of working hard to get theirself out of that lifestyle. they like getting things the easiest way for them. no matter who they victimize to do it. period.

223 gangs in Tulsa now?
What have "law enforcement" been doing here since ten years ago, when there were only a few?
That DARE just say "no" thing doesn't work so well unless there's something better to say "yes" to.
These statistics alone are criminal.
Looks to me like our children's welfare has not been prioritized for quite a while.
Can you say "broken system", girls and boys?

And they do this because they are so smart. Morons. I wonder what goes through their mind when they post, "Come joine my gang. We rob, kill, steal, and rape people for fun. It is awesome."

dusty...you need to go outside and get some fresh oxygen to that addled brain of yours. explain what makes blaming criminals for being criminals racist? i don't think i ever said anything aout anyones race. you're just trying to find racists everywhere, aren't you? and what's this about blaming someobody for what i do?? i've never robbed or mugged anyone in my life. or sold or took drugs. i work an average of 60 hours a week, nimrod. so don't dream up this crap about blaming people for what i do. howbout you start blaming criminals for what criminals do, instead of blaming everyone else for what criminals do? wow. i feel like i'm in a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

I blame the Tulsa PD. Short on staffed...yes. Short on brains...yes. When I read a story that says there are 223 gangs in Tulsa 3 days after I see 3 motorcycle cops and at least 8 police cars on the highway busting for speeding I take issue with that! If a STUDY can identify 223 gangs then why can't the PD? And if they know about the gangs why are they not taking action? Find a gun on a kid/adult/senior citizen...be they black/white/yellow/brown or even PURPLE you shoot first ask later. Don't be gentle with these kids. They have always proven themselves as a danger to society and must be treated as such. See a red bandana (for example or whatever they wear anymore) on a group of 6 huddled at a QT bust first ask later. See a gang tat on anyone and arrest...if they struggle beat the wholy crap outta them. Make gangs hate Tulsa so much they want to leave...need to leave! No pity...no shame...take care of business Tulsa PD...give the drivers a break for a week or two!
