Survey backs fun, games at stadium
Family entertainment is wanted at the ex-baseball field, it shows.

See the complete survey results.
Drillers Stadium at Expo Square is no longer home to a professional baseball team, but that doesn't mean Tulsa-area residents want the fun and games gone, too.
Results of the Old Drillers Stadium Property Survey indicate strong interest in using the site for sporting events, concerts and other forms of entertainment — regardless of whether the stadium itself is left standing.
"I think the thing that really comes across to me is that the public wants at least a part, if not all of it, used for family entertainment in one form or another," said Tulsa County Commissioner Fred Perry, the fair board's chairman.
More than 2,000 surveys were completed over a six-week period during September and October. About 80 percent of the responses came from Tulsa, Broken Arrow and Owasso.
The survey was created by the Drillers Stadium Property Committee, a panel formed to provide the fair board with a recommendation on how the site should be used now that the Drillers Double-A baseball team is moving to ONEOK Field downtown.
The survey consisted of 10 questions, including three that spoke directly to how the 5.5-acre property on the southwest corner of 15th Street and Yale Avenue should be used. In all three instances, respondents indicated they wanted the space to be used for sports- and entertainment-related activities.
Asked to rank what type of general uses they would most likely support, respondents' top three answers were: a multiuse sports complex (812); public events such as concerts and festivals (648); and development of entertainment options (444).
A follow-up question asking respondents to get specific garnered a similar response: 352 said they would like the site to be used for a soccer field, 107 wanted to see outdoor concerts and festivals there, and 103 suggested the space be used for an amusement park.
When the survey asked what types of activities should take place at the existing stadium, soccer again came out on top, followed by concerts and festivals, and baseball.
Perry has said that whatever is done with the site will not entail a tax increase. Respondents to the survey seem to be of a like mind.
When asked how future development should be paid for, 75 percent said private developers should foot the bill.
"However, over 70 percent were all right with some public financing such as bonds as long as there was no tax increase and the taxpayers were paid back from the proceeds," Perry said.
Nearly 63 percent of respondents, meanwhile, said the site should be self-supporting.
Perry said again last week that the fair board would not necessarily be bound by the survey results.
However, they will be a major factor in formulating the committee's recommendation to the board.
Perry said he expects the Drillers Stadium Property Committee to make its recommendation to the fair board by the end of the year.
The fair board, which is officially known as the Tulsa County Public Facilities Authority, is expected to make its decision about the site by April.

I hope they do put the stadium to good use. It would be nice to have some outdoor concerts or whatever else.

Seems to me that a lot of money and heartache could have been saved by keeping sports and concerts at the current Driller's Stadium rather than moving downtown. This just shows what poor thinking and glad-handing the city has gotten themselves into. I feel sorry for the downtown merchants that are getting screwed by the new stadium.

A women's professional softball team would be an ideal fit for the stadium, as it is. Oklahoma City has proven softball is a viable enterprise, even on an amatuer basis. We could form a professional team, then just stand back and watch it take off.

USL-1 is not a good option right now with the upstart NASL league taking all of the good USL-1 teams.

TUr@cing don't pick one team just be a hub for a whole league. Could displace the race track. Soccer and softball. If you build it they will come just like a sports mall. But don't tell anyone I said so. I don't know how to pour water out of a boot.

It still amazes me that people continue to bring up the notion that the Drillers should have stayed at Driller Park. Please, for the last time, the Drillers were moving from Driller Park no matter what! They were either moving to Jenks or Downtown so Tulsa did what was needed to keep the team in Tulsa.

The survey got 2000 responses.
There must have been 100X that number of comments on the dozens of TW article pages throughout the whole Bells, Annexation, Big Splash, and other Fairgrounds sagas over the past few years.

Smity it still amazes me that some people were naïve enough to buy in to the political propaganda that the Drillers were actually considering moving to Jenks!
It is a fact that the downtown plan has been on the table since early 2002. My company wanted to use the area as parking but we were warned back then that eventually there would be ground breaking there for a new ballpark.
The recent Jenks ploy was nothing but scare tactics to justify pushing it through under the Queen!
I mean come on... do you really think there was ever a possibility of “The Jenks Drillers”
HA HA HA HA HA!

Dr. Strangelove nailed it, but, failing that, wouldn't it be a handy place to play baseball?

2000 responses is pretty pitiful. It shows that a small percentage of Tulsans really care about Tulsa and have no right to complain if they do not participate in these surveys or vote. I voted for the concert option. Tulsa is much more known for concerts than OKC. All my OKC friends are jealous of all the great concerts we are getting at the BOK Center, Cains, etc. Lets keep it up and keep OKC people spending their $$$ in Tulsa. It will help build up Tulsa's downtown, restaurants, hotels, and nightlife.

I said I didn't believe it when I first heard they were thinking about going to Jenks. I am over there quite often and they were laughing about that rumor. From the jest I got, they didn't want them over there.
.
Just what I heard not what I know for sure.

I saw Counting Crows at Driller Stadium in '08. Great setting for outdoor concerts.
Women's softball would be great, too.
It's sad Tulsa now has no amusement park. There used to be two, when I was growing up.
I doubt that the Fairgrounds will house one, again. Oklahoma weather, liability and mechanical inspections have made them a risky investment here.
There are many possible uses for the stadium as it is, to be rented out for events.

Let's dispense with the pretenses of actually seeking public input on what to do with it and just sell it to Quik-Trip as they going to do anyway. You know that it's just a matter of time before this becomes the new jewel in their corporate crown. Look at what they did with the Camelot Hotel. What a beautiful parking lot! I can hardly wait!

The problem with your conspiracy theory is that it was the city of Jenks, not Tulsa that made the proposal. It was Jenks that spent time and money on drawing up a project and gathering investors for it.
It was not the city of Tulsa that made the threat, it was the Drillers. It was Jenks that put forth the effort to lure them there. Jenks has nothing to gain from spending their money and creating a fake program for investors to get Tulsa to move the stadium downtown.
You can believe whatever you want, that it what conspiracy theorists generally do anyways. But the reality is that Drillers stadium was old and worn down. There is a lot more to the stadium than the metal seats you use as a fan. It was also pointless to sink money into fixing up a rotting stadium when it does no good in its location. There is a reason there is so much parking there- because no one goes there for anything else.
I for one will enjoy being able to hang out in a revitalized district (those shabby buildings are being quickly bought up) and then walk over to a game. Cities all over the country are doing this. OKC had done the same thing to great success. I am glad our leaders thought ahead about what was good for the city and would bring in tax dollars.

I believe I said they were planning to move downtown. The Jenks move may have been a ploy but my point is they were going to move out of Dirller Park no matter what so I can't believe some people keep bring up the idea of them staying put at Driller Park.

Thunder, it was not just a "rumor". There was an actual proposal put together by investors and the city of Jenks. The Drillers signed a letter of intent to move there.
Google "Jenks Drillers Proposal" and you will find not only the plans but the news articles about what was going on.
