Officials prepare for trial of former Custer Co. sheriff

FAIRVIEW — Major County officials are gearing up for the trial of a former Custer County sheriff facing a host of sex charges involving female inmates.
Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of 56-year-old Michael Burgess, who is being tried on charges of rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and bribery. If convicted, the former lawman could face up to 467 years in prison.
The trial was moved to Fairview after Burgess' lawyers cited the publicity surrounding the case. Custer County judges and prosecutors already had asked to be removed from the case because of their relationship with the former sheriff.
Major County Sheriff Steve Randolph says more than 200 people are expected at the courthouse Monday, including potential jurors, prospective witnesses and members of the media.

Big Harp, I think you hit the nail on the head. Some folks who have a little authority go over board with that authority.
