OKLAHOMA CITY — Fred C. Smith Jr. has been appointed as the new district attorney for Comanche and Cotton counties in southwestern Oklahoma.

Gov. Brad Henry announced his choice Thursday to fill the expiring term of District Attorney Robert Schulte, who retired after more than two decades in office.

The 55-year-old Smith has been the first assistant district attorney in the area encompassing Lawton since 1987. He is a graduate of the Oklahoma State University who earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University.

Henry describes him as "tough, principled and dedicated to the rule of law."
