Shawnee man dies rescuing drowning child at Chickasaw National Recreation Area

SULPHUR — A 32-year-old Shawnee man died Monday saving a drowning child at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

The 8-year-old girl who began struggling in a stream near Veterans Lake Creek was treated and released from the hospital, but the man who saved her died at the hospital, Eric Leonard, CNRA public information, officer said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The incident happened about 5:15 p.m. when a group of people were swimming in the creek, Leonard said.
