MILFORD, Neb. — The Seward County Sheriff's Office has identified a 10-year-old boy killed in an accidental shooting.

The department says Michael Tunnell III of McCalla, Ala., died Wednesday afternoon after being shot by a 13-year-old boy in a camper at an RV park near Milford in southeast Nebraska. Investigators have ruled the shooting an accident. Charges are not expected.

Sheriff's deputy Daniel Hejl had said the older boy was showing the 10-year-old his father's semiautomatic handgun when it went off. Officials say Michael was pronounced dead at a Seward hospital.

Officials say they do not plan to identify the 13-year-old other than he and his family are from Oklahoma.

The boys were in Nebraska with family members who are working on an oil pipeline.

What a shame. When children are in the house, guns should not be left where children can access them. They be be unloaded with the ammo stored in seperate location. Guns should also have those trigger locks installed on them. My prayers to all involved.

I'm sure the owner of the handgun was keeping it for "protection."

Sadly, the law of unintended consequences plays out again.

Last week several kids died in a horific automibile accident in NY. How mandie annually in cars? Throughout the summer sevral drown in lakes and pools in Oklahoma. Nationwide, hundreds annually. Shall we say then that parents should not allow their kids to be in automibiles or water? Afterall, cars are driven for convenience and swimming for leisure. Isn't protection a much more noble cause for ensuing risk than are convenience and leisure?
