Choctaw man killed in head-on collision

LEON, Kan. — Two men are dead following a head-on collision in southeast Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that a 2004 Chevrolet SUV was attempting to pass two other vehicles while traveling west on U.S. 400 in Leon Monday evening when a 1991 Oldsmobile station wagon appeared in the opposite direction.

Both drivers swerved to the shoulder to avoid the collision and hit head-on, killing both drivers.

The SUV was driven by 52-year-old Michael L. West of Choctaw, while the station wagon was driven by Gary D. Smith, 50, of Springfield, Mo. By Associated Press
